PC operating systems

Although PCs are generally associated with MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows, there are several other operating systems that can be used on PC hardware, including IBM's OS/2 and several variants of Unix. This section provides information about many of these operating systems.


MS-DOS

An introduction to DOS for beginners by John English.
4DOS is a powerful shareware replacement for the standard DOS command line shell (COMMAND.COM) from JP Software. An essential utility for anyone who uses the command line a lot.
OpenDOS 7.01 is a free version of DOS from Caldera. Formerly DR-DOS from Digital Research, this briefly became Novell DOS when Novell bought out Digital Research, and has since been released as a free product when Caldera acquired the rights from Novell during a retrenchment exercise on Novell's part. The source code to OpenDOS is also available at Caldera's website.

FreeDOS is an ongoing project to produce a Microsoft-free clone of MS-DOS, including freely available source code. There is an alternate site in Spain.

Windows 95/NT

Microsoft's official questions and answers about Windows 95. Windows 95 is a registered trademark of the Microsoft Corporation, who kindly made this document available. It tells you all the good reasons for upgrading to Windows 95 (see your local Microsoft dealer for prices).

Other operating systems

The Real Time FAQ from the newsgroup comp.realtime includes some information about real-time operating systems.
This CD contains a complete version of Linux, a free version of Unix for PCs, including manuals and other documentation.

FreeBSD is another free Unix clone for PCs. There is also a UK mirror site hosted by Pavilion Internet in Brighton.
