Check Hardware and Software Compatibility

Before you upgrade to Windows 2000, use the resources on Microsoft.com to assess the readiness of your system to make sure your hardware and software will run on Windows 2000. Search for computers, hardware devices, and software applications that are compatible with Windows 2000, and find out what steps you may need to take before upgrading.

Analyze your system for potential problems

The Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer tool analyzes your system and reports potentially incompatible hardware devices and software applications. The tool compares the devices and applications on your system against a list of known issues. Although this check also occurs during Windows 2000 Setup, you can run the tool  before installing Windows 2000 to help ensure your installation will succeed.

BIOS Compatibility in Windows 2000

Finding out if your BIOS (basic input/output system) is compatible with Windows 2000 is important for two reasons:

  1. You might not be able to use the advanced power management and device configuration features in Windows 2000 if you do not have the most current BIOS version for your system.
  2. If your computer manufacturer has indicated that you need a new BIOS and you do not update it, or you install the wrong BIOS version, your computer may stop working properly. Please be aware that installing an incorrect BIOS update may cause serious damage to your computer system. Review the Question and Answer document below to find out more about BIOS compatibility and Windows 2000.
