This program is the perfect research assistant. You can keep the program running in the background as you work, and can access it from a tiny toolbar. It handles all the picky details of research for you. It consists of two parts -- the library and notes. You enter the bibliographic details of your books into the library, and click on a specific text to make notes on it. When you're ready, the program transfers your selections to a text file, the Windows clipboard, or to your word processor -- you can even insert selections as footnotes or endnotes. Can't find a book you were working with? The program has a fast search engine, so you'll find the book in a flash. An ideal program for researchers, students, lawyers, and anyone compiling information from various sources.

Chimp is a cute on-screen version of a tabbed notebook. You can keep any information you please -- miscellaneous notes, to-do lists, and contact information. Chimp is Internet-enabled, so you can use it to store your URLs and to launch them with a click. You can also store file paths, and launch applications via a right-click. The program is completely customisable, and has lots of printing options. You can keep it handy in the system tray, so that it's always available to you.

Sick of performing the same old repetitive tasks with your computer every day? EZ Macros can save your sanity. It's an easy-to-use keyboard and mouse macro recorder. It records both mouse movements and your keystrokes, so you can use a combination of both, and assign the resulting macro to a hotkey. You can also edit macros after you have recorded them. You can create macros in Windows 95 itself, or in any program on your system. Creating your macros couldn't be simpler, but it comes with a comprehensive Help file you can consult if you're having programs, as well as lots of hints and tips.

Super NoteTab is a terrific freeware replacement for Windows
95's wimpy Notepad. This program offers lots of great productivity features you won't find anywhere else. For example, you can open as many files as you have system resources; the files are displayed with tabs called the Document Selector, so that you can switch between them easily. It's Web-enabled -- simply click on a URL in a document, and it opens your browser. It also comes with a Clipbook window with templates for HTML tags, acronyms etc, search and replace through all open documents, plus much more.

This is the new full 32-bit version of Second Copy, the fastest and easiest no-hands backup utility around. It allows you to keep 'second copies' of your most vital files in a different location. You can set the backup interval, and the program will perform the backups for you automatically, or you can choose to start a backup manually. To use the program you simply create profiles for the files you want to copy to another folder, drive or computer across your network. Each profile contains a source, destination, and the timing of the backup intervals. You can use the Express Setup for most profiles. This program will split large files so that you can transport them via floppy, or transmit them via e-mail. The graphical interface means that you need to do little more than click, or you can just use 'Send To MasterSplitter' by means of the right mouse button. Of course, you'll often need to send files to someone who doesn't have MasterSplitter. In those cases, just check the 'Create Reassemble Batch File' checkbox, and a batch file will be created which you can send with the pieces so that the receiver can put the file together. MasterSplitter works on both text and binary files.

PerfectScreens allows you to have multiple virtual desktops, and to switch among them as you need to. This is much simpler than using the Task Manager and constantly minimising and maximising windows. Each screen you create has its own menu and toolbar. New features in this version include: improved security to protect your screens with passwords; a filter for each screen so that you can open the recent files you've been working on more quickly; plus automatic screen creation.

Programs which come without an uninstall routine (and even those which do) leave bits of themselves all over the place. RegClean is a new Microsoft utility which speeds up the loading of Windows 95 by scanning and making repairs to the Windows Registry. Easy to use, you click on the icon, and it performs the scan -- this can take from two to 30 minutes. You're then given the option to fix errors. If you make a lot of changes to your system, use RegClean every couple of weeks to keep your computer running smoothly.
Thinking of making the move to NT 4.0? If you don't have a Pentium, don't even think about it. And whilst the minimum RAM requirement is 16Mb, you'll really need 32Mb to be comfortable. And even if you've got all this, Windows NT 4.0 may not support other components in your PC. Microsoft has provided a Windows NT 4.0 Compatibility Test Tool, which is available from its Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/NTWksSupport/ or on our PC User Offline CD this month. This tool examines your PC and tells you if it can support Windows NT Workstation or Server 4.0. It also provides you with a summary of detected hardware. The Test Tool requires Windows 95, or Windows NT 3.x or higher to run properly.

This shareware version includes both the 16- and 32-bit versions of the program. ShortKeys is a macro program which allows you to insert boilerplate text into any Windows program. You can use it with any program which requires text input. As the name implies, it expands abbreviations for you. You can expand a word into a sentence, a paragraph or several paragraphs, saving you not only time, but also aggravation -- no more errors. You can have up to 1000 word and replacement text combinations. When the program is running, it monitors all activity at the keyboard, and if one of the abbreviations is used, it will immediately be expanded. Even if you have a similar option in your word processing program, you'll find that ShortKeys is faster and easier.

4Sight is a super-fast file finding utility. It finds all the files on any of your disks matching criteria you choose via a menu. It shows you a catalogue of the files, and you can list, copy, move, delete, edit or view them. If you choose to find files containing text, when you view the files, you'll see that that text is displayed in a different colour. If you need more file attributes, you can also use the command line. 4Sight works brilliantly with outside programs. For example, if you choose a word processor, you can open a file and edit it. When you exit the word processor, you're back in 4Sight's file listing. The program also has lots of additional features, so if you're annoyed with Windows' slow searching, check it out.
