PaintShop Pro 4.0

URL: http://www.digitalworkshop.co.uk/
Not yet reviewed

PaintShop Pro has always been our favourite graphic file viewer and converter, but in this latest version, PaintShop Pro is now a comprehensive graphics package and virtually a must for anyone getting into Web page authoring. It lets you view, create and save graphics in the GIF and JPG formats common on the Web, and provides image manipulation tools that'll let you grab a photo or other image and edit it to your heart's content. See our Guide to Web authoring tools.

WinZip

URL: http://www.winzip.com
Rating: 9/10

The award-winning shareware utility WinZip is our perennial favourite for unzipping files. It can also be used to compress files into ZIP archives and supports other compression routines if you load the relevant DOS utilities. WinZip boasts a nifty ZIP wizard for beginners, excellent online help and drag-and-drop operation.

Shareware program that does a great job in recording, editing and compressing sound files so they don't take up too much space and time downloading. See our Guide to Web authoring tools.

ThunderByte Anti-Virus

URL: http://www. thunderbyte.com
Rating: 9/10

It's vital for Internet surfers, but really all PC users should get a good anti-virus program -- one with advanced scanning techniques so that it can detect unknown viruses and with regular, free updates so that it can identify the latest viruses.

Thunderbyte qualifies on all counts. When we tested Windows 95 anti-virus programs in August 1996, we found this version of ThunderByte wasn't quite as easy to use as its DOS/Windows 3.1 cousin. But it's still a very good package, and a shareware version is available for download and from our PC User Offline CD-ROM.

PowerToys for Windows 95

URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/software.htm

Full collection of Microsoft's shell add-ons from the Win95 Shell Development team.

Once unzipped right-click on the file called "install.inf" and select INSTALL from the pop-up menu.

Windows 95 Kernel Power Toys

URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/software.htm

Not to be outdone by the GUI team and their PowerToys, the Microsoft team responsible for the Win95 Kernel (the heart of the operating system) have produced their own PowerToys. These small utilities do not come with an install routine, so once unzipped, just copy them to your Windows folder and run them.

Ani Edit & Image Edit

Two useful little programs for creating animated Windows cursors and icons.

Microsoft Viewers

URL: http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/
Free

You may come across some Word, Excel or PowerPoint documents on the Net. If you don't have the programs, you can use these free viewers from Microsoft:

  • Word 7 Viewer
  • Excel 7 Viewer
  • PowerPoint 95 Viewer

ZipFolders

URL: http://www.windows95.com
Registered price: $60
Rating: 8/10

This clever program lets you handle your ZIP files directly, without any zipping or unzipping. You can run executables and play games right from your ZIP files. ZipFolders is tightly integrated with Explorer. When you install it, you'll see that for each ZIP file on your system, ZipFolders has automatically created a folder with a ZIF extension: open the folder and work with the files as you would with any other files. The ZIPS aren't removed from your system, although you can do this if you wish to save space. Now you can work with the zipped files in the ZIF folder, just as if they weren't zipped -- it makes archiving completely transparent on your system. -- Angela Booth

Instant Drive Access

URL: http://home1.inet.tele.dk/jel/English/start.htm
Rating: 8/10

Instant Drive Access does exactly what it says. It installs itself as a small icon in the Windows 95 taskbar, and gives you immediate access to all the drives you have on your computer. Optionally, it will also show available memory and free disk space. -- Angela Booth

McAfee VirusScan

URL: http://www.mcafee.com
Rating: 6/10

McAfee's is probably the most popular anti-virus program available and does a reasonable job with known viruses (so keep it updated!), but our tests found that there are better packages available. Still, you might want to try the shareware version so see why it's so popular.

PaintShop Pro 3.11

WinZip

URL: http://www.winzip.com
Rating: 9/10

The majority of downloadable software is compressed into a single archive to save disk space and transfer time -- the ZIP format and extension is the most common.

The award-winning shareware utility WinZip is our perennial favourite for unzipping these files. It can also be used to compress files into ZIP archives and supports other compression routines if you load the relevant DOS utilities. WinZip boasts a nifty ZIP wizard for beginners, excellent online help and drag-and-drop operation.

TransMac

URL:http://zeppo.cnet.com/Resources/Software/Selections/Pcsys/transmac.html

The Apple Mac has been able to read DOS format discs for ages, but there are few solutions to reading a Mac disk on a DOS/Windows machine. This shareware program solves this problem.

ClipMaster Pro

URL: http://www.zdnet.com
Registered price: $40
Rating: 8/10

ClipMaster Pro is completely transparent in use. Once started, it runs in the background and collects anything and everything that you either copy or cut. The number of clips is limited only by your memory. To make it visible, tap the hotkey, and a list of the clips appears. -- Angela Booth
