WebView: Browsing your hard drive

The whole idea behind Internet Explorer 4.0 is to make finding, organizing, and navigating through information a whole lot easier. WebView not only makes browsing the files and folders on your PC as easy as browsing the Web, it can also give you a little help along the way.

WebView lets users, corporations, and Internet Content Providers (ICPs) customize the way directories and files are displayed in Internet Explorer 4.0. Users, for example, might change the background image displayed in a folder to reflect the folder's contents. And more advanced users or Web developers might add ActiveX™ controls or Java™ applets.

For example...

The My Computer and Control Panel folders in the Internet Explorer Platform Preview have customized views built in. Once you've installed the Platform Preview, click the My Computer icon on your desktop or the Control Panel icon on the Start-Settings menu.

To turn WebView on and off, select Web View from the View menu, or just right-click on a clear area of the folder view, select View, then click Web.

The My Computer Web view can show you how much free and used space you have on a hard disk, while the Control Panel applet gives you detailed information and even Help for each icon.

Not all folders have a custom Web view, but we've included a means to create your own Web views using the Customize This Folder wizard. Here are a couple of examples of how a corporation or vendor might use it to create custom views on an intranet, or even a floppy disk.
