Desktop Components bring live Web content to your desktop!

Internet Explorer 4.0 introduces an exciting new technology that brings the Web to your desktop: Desktop Components. These components are pieces of Web pages or HTML-based code that you can place directly on your Active Desktop. You can move them, resize them, and specify how often you want them to update. With Desktop Components, you can create your own Web "newspaper," where the content you care about most updates automatically.

To use Desktop Components, you must be running Internet Explorer 4.0 with the Integrated Shell installed and the Active Desktop turned on.

How does it work?

You can check out some cool Desktop Components in our Desktop Component Gallery. Click the "Put it on my Desktop" link under each component to quickly and easily add it to your desktop.

You can also create your own desktop components from any Web page. To add or remove a Desktop Component:

  1. In Control Panel, open Display Properties and then click the Desktop tab.
  2. To add a component, click New and then follow the instructions on your screen.
  3. To remove a component, select it in the list and click Remove. Note that you can also temporarily hide components on your desktop by clearing its check box in the list.
