Face touchup tutorial

This tutorial shows you how to edit small areas in photos. The tutorial uses the same sample photo and follows the same steps as the Face Touchup Instructional Video. It is not necessary to watch the Instructional Video before you start the tutorial, but you may find it helpful.

To practice using the tools in this tutorial, you can work on a copy of the photo that appears in the Face Touchup Instructional Video.
To open the photo:
  1. On the File menu, click Open.
  2. Browse to the directory in which you installed Digital Image Pro, and then select the \Tutorial\facetchp.jpg file.

    The default location is c:\Program Files\Picture It! 7\Tutorial\.

  3. Click Open.

  4. On the File menu, click Save As, and then save a copy of the photo to work on.

    In this tutorial you must save the sample photo with a new name before you make any changes. The sample photo is in read-only format; you cannot save any changes to the original. In general, saving a copy of a photo is useful because it preserves the original for other projects.

Lesson 1: Fix red eye

In this lesson, you learn how to fix red eye. Red eye is the eye discoloration that often results from flash photography. Use the fix red eye tool to repair discolored eyes quickly and accurately.

Using the sample photo, you will correct the red eye to improve the appearance of the overall photo.

To fix red eye:
  1. On the Touchup menu, click Fix Red Eye.
  2. Move the circular cursor to the first red eye, click the center of the red area, and then repeat for the other eye.

    After you click each red eye, you will see a cross sign with a red center marking the area that will be fixed.Fix red eye tool

  3. On the Fix Red Eye task pane, click Red-eye auto fix.
  4. Click Done.

Lesson 2: Remove a blemish

In this lesson, you learn how to remove a blemish. You can use the same tool to remove any small imperfection or flaw in a photo.

Using the sample photo, you will remove the blemish that appears below and to the left of the mouth.

To remove a blemish:
  1. On the Touchup menu, click Remove Spots or Blemishes.
  2. Using the zoom tool, zoom in on the area with the blemish.

  3. Move the crosshair cursor over the blemish, and then click the center of the blemish.

    The blemish is blended into the surrounding areas and disappears.

  4. Click Done.

Lesson 3: Remove wrinkles

In this lesson, you learn how to remove wrinkles. You can use the same tool to remove other elongated imperfections or flaws in a photo, such as stray hairs.

Using the sample photo, you will make the subject appear younger by removing wrinkles around her eyes.

To remove wrinkles:
  1. On the Touchup menu, point to Other Photo Repair, and then click Remove Wrinkles.
  2. Using the zoom tool, zoom in on the picture (to about 250%) to make it easier to work with the wrinkles.
  3. Click the smallest circle.

    This enables you to fix narrower wrinkles, such as the ones in the sample photo.

  4. Below the right eye, click the left end of a wrinkle, drag the cursor along the wrinkle, and then click the other end. Repeat this for any other wrinkles you want to fix.
  5. Click Done.

Lesson 4: Polish teeth

In this lesson, you learn how to make teeth brighter. The airbrush tool enables you to touch up faces by removing shiny areas on faces, stains, and more.

Using the sample photo, you will enhance the smile by brightening the teeth.

To polish teeth:
  1. On the Touchup menu, point to Other Photo Repair, and then click Airbrush.
  2. On the paint panel, click the white square.
  3. Click Customize paint settings.
  4. In the box beside the Paint Transparency slider, type 55.

    This ensures that the white isn't too bright and doesn't take away detail.

  6. Using the zoom tool, zoom in on the photo until you can easily work with the teeth.

  7. Click each tooth in several places to apply color evenly.
  8. When you finish applying color to the teeth, click Done.

Lesson 5: Shrink a double chin

In this lesson, you learn how to shrink a double chin. The shrink effect reduces the edge of an object.

Using the sample photo, you will reduce the slight double chin.

To shrink a double chin:
  1. In the Stack, select the thumbnail of the original picture.
  2. On the Effects menu, click Distortion Brush.
  3. Under Click an effect, click Shrink.
  4. Under Click a small circle for a narrow band effect, a larger circle for a wider one, click the smallest circle.
  5. Using the zoom tool, zoom in on the picture until you can easily work with the double chin (about 175%).
  6. Center the circular cursor on the bottom of the double chin, and then slowly drag the cursor along the edge of the double chin. Repeat until the double chin is gone.

    For smaller areas that need to be corrected, just click that area.

  7. Click Done.
