Loudspeakers and Microphones

RoomMachine 844 has two inputs and two outputs. The inputs are fed to virtual loudspeakers in the simulated room while the outputs are connected to virtual microphones. The position of loudspeakers and microphones can be controlled by the knobs PAN L (pan left), PAN R (pan right), DISTANCE and STEREO (stereowidth).

The distance between each loudspeaker and the front wall is fixed, while the distance between the front wall and the microphones can be adjusted using the DISTANCE knob. When DISTANCE is turned fully left, microphones are close to the speakers. When turned right, microphones are far away.

To control the distance between the left and right microphone use STEREO. As its name says, it more or less controls the stereowidth of the output. If STEREO is turned fully left, both microphones are close to each other and hence, both output signals of the room will be identical (i.e., the output is mono). If STEREO is turned fully right, the left microphone is close to the left wall and the right microphone is close to the right wall, resulting in a strong stereo effect.

In a similar manner, the position of the two loudspeakers can be controlled. PAN L determines the position of the left speaker between the left and right wall, while PAN R determines the position of the right speaker between both walls. Turning PAN L fully left places the left speaker close to the left wall, turning it right places it close to the right wall. The same holds for PAN R and the right loudspeaker. As a consequence, when both knobs have the same position, it is as if there is only one loudspeaker.
