Hair removal by laser

Adapted extract from a news item by David Stipp in The Wall Street Journal (April 18th '95) monitored for the Institute by Roger Knights.

ThermoLase Corporation's stock price soared 30% on Wall Street in April '95 following its announcement that the Food and Drug Administration had approved sales of its laser-based hair-removal system.

ThermoLase's technique typically takes two visits, and 'doing an upper lip takes about 10 minutes', said Ed Lock, ThermoLase's director of corporate development. The company uses a proprietary lotion that penetrates hair follicles, followed by shinning a special laser on the area. The lotion conducts heat from the laser into the follicle to achieve 'the physiological equivalent of electrolysis' without pain or unwanted destruction of surrounding tissue - whereas getting rid of 1,000 to 2,000 hairs on an upper lip by electrolysis can take 30 to 50 visits, with each removal 'feeling like a bee sting'.

The company's intention is to open hair-removal salons around the world.
