The reenchantment project

Phyllis J O'Rourke

Adapted from a gnomic announcement sent to the Institute.

The Reenchantment project is a redefinition of life as art. The project has evolved over time into an art form where art is seen as gift, not as a mechanism for fame and fortune. A series of projects, lectures, booklets and workshops have evolved over time that are aimed at reawakening a sense of wonder and the joy of life. Participation in the Reenchantment project is voluntary and open to anyone. There are no dues or fees for participation. A collection of essays written about the Reenchantment project will eventually be published in book form.

A life of enchantment results from being unattached to the outcome and from being not repulsed by change or new ideas. It is a living, a practice, an oracular tradition, an art. It is the freedom to express and acknowledge our own and others' creativity. It is the freedom to care for ourselves and each other with compassion. It is a sensitivity, a commitment to paying attention, to seeing with the eyes of a child and listening with the ears of God. The life of enchantment is always available, no matter how far away or long ago our last encounter. Reenchantment is the regaining of this lost light, usually after an experience of being in the dark.
