Volunteers driving at 30mph to slow down speedsters

Adapted from a news item by Tony Bassett in the Evening Standard, June 9th '95.

John Boxall, a Buckingham Council road safety officer, wants volunteer drivers to take to the roads at 30mph to force speeding motorists to slow down.

He aims to recruit up to 5,000 volunteers to drive through built-up areas keeping to legal speed limits and setting a good example to fellow drivers.

Each volunteer will have a car sticker proclaiming: 'I am a Mobile Traffic Calmer'.

Both the police and the RAC have given a cautious welcome to Mr Boxall's £10,000 plan.
