Office Standard

General Tips

To ensure that dates in Word documents are represented correctly in date-related calculations, insert Date field types with four-digit years.

See the Year 2000 Product Guide for each of the Microsoft Office programs you use for information on how they handle dates.

Office 2000 Standard - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Office Standard (Macintosh) 98 (English)
Office Standard 97 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Office Standard 95 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Office Standard 4.XX - 16-Bit Windows (English)
Office Standard (Macintosh) 4.2 (English)

Office Standard 95 - 32-Bit Windows

Recommendation: Install the Office 95 Year 2000 Update. To request the update on CD-ROM call 8880-673-8925 toll free.

See the Year 2000 Product Guide for your computer operating system and install prerequisite updates for the Year 2000 compliance.

Date handling: The Office Year 2000 Update addresses known Year 2000 related issues in the software programs used in Office 95.

Advanced Find under File/Open allows the entry of two-digit shortcuts for years. File creation dates are interpreted to fall within a range between the current year minus 90 years and plus 10 years. For example, in the year 1998 the date range spans from 1908 to 2008.

For more information: See the Office Standard 95 Product Guide document. See the Year 2000 Product Guide for each of the Microsoft Office programs you use.

Office Standard 4.XX - 16-Bit Windows

Recommendation: No action necessary.

See the Year 2000 Product Guide for your computer operating system and install prerequisite updates for the Year 2000 compliance.

Date handling: When two-digits are entered for years in PowerPoint 4.0, they are not converted to four-digit years.

Excel 5.0 interprets two-digit years less than 20 to be in the 2000s and two-digit years 21 or larger to be in the 1900s.

For more information: See the Office Standard 4.XX Product Guide document. See the Year 2000 Product Guide for each of the Microsoft Office programs you use.

Office Standard (Macintosh) 4.2

Recommendation: No action necessary.

Date handling: Word 6.0 interprets the two-digit shortcut "00" as the year 2000. It interprets other two-digit shortcuts (primarily in Table Sort and Word fields) as being in the 1900s.

When two-digits are entered for years in PowerPoint 4.0, they are not converted to four-digit years.

If only the last two digits of the year are pasted from another program into Excel, the date might be interpreted differently than the originating program interpreted it.

Excel 5.0 interprets two-digit years less than 20 to be in the 2000s and two-digit years 21 or larger to be in the 1900s. Four digits must be entered for years prior to 1/1/1920 or after 12/31/2019.

For more information: See the Office Standard (Macintosh) 4.2 Product Guide document. See the Year 2000 Product Guide documents for individual software programs in Office Standard (Macintosh) 4.2.
