  3. Welcome to Carlson's Icosahedron---                              
  4. the Ultimate Scramble-Unscramble Puzzle                          
  5.                                                                  
  6. To make this program work you will need:                         
  7.                                                                  
  8. An IBM PC with color monitor                                     
  9. IBM Advanced BASIC                                               
  10.                                                                  
  11. Instructions:                                                    
  12.                                                                  
  13. boot with DOS 2.0                                                
  14. load BASICA from your DOS disk                                   
  15. when the basic prompt  comes on type                             
  16. LOAD"ICOSAHED (return)                                           
  17. then type                                                        
  18. RUN (return)                                                     
  19. you should see:                                                  
  20. a musical logo                                                   
  21. an introductory message, requesting cash                         
  22. then type  1 or 0 (return)                                       
  23. and you should see the Icosahedron appear                        
  24. as if through venetian blinds                                    
  25.                                                                  
  26. hit the function keys and you will see circular regions          
  27. disappear and reappear rotated around small pentagons            
  28. that remain fixed, in the manner of the faces of Rubik's cube.

  31. the IBM with the Enhanced Graphics Adapter using the Virtual     
  32. Device Interface software toolkit, inquire for avaliability.

  44. dewdney explains how you are seeing the front and back of the    
  45. puzzle at the same time, plus gets into the math and programming 
  46.                                                                  
  47. This puzzle has more combinations than Rubiks cube cubed         
  48. solving it is pretty difficult---but therin lies the challenge   
  49. read all the books on how to solve the cube and you'll see the   
  50. approach you'll need to solve the Icosahedron.                   
  51.                                                                  
  52. Finding a routine that  unscrambles the icosahedron in  close to 
  53. 48 moves (the unbeatable minimum) has got to be one of the  more 
  54. difficult problems in mathematics. Solve it and youll be famous  
  55. and well both get jobs at Bell Labs doing encryption!
