Dear Puzzle Hacker: January 6,1986
Here is your demonstration copy of Carlson's Icosahedron, the
ultimate scramble-unscramble puzzle mentioned in the January 1986
Scientific American Computer Recreations column.
I realize you were probably expecting me to send you a price
first, followed by your check to me, followed by this diskette to
you, but why do that when I already know you want this program.
So, I am sending it to you right away. If you like it, send me
ten dollars and we'll call it even, if not return it in the same
package.
This puzzle is so fantastic and complex I really should charge
you hackers about $30.00 for all the work I put into it, but some
if you are students or teachers or even starving programmers like
myself, so I figured $10.00 would be all right.
I want this program to spread like wildfire---give it to your
friends--- compete and collaborate---explore the universe of
10^68 possible combinations---be the first to crack the puzzle
and write a fast unscrambling routine and get mentioned in
Scientific American!
I love this puzzle and I want everyone to play with this program,
so I am giving the source code away for almost nothing, and
giving everybody unlimited in house (but not resale) copy
privileges.
On the other hand, being a starving programmer and mathematician
I would like to be rewarded if you think I did something great.
So here is the deal--- if you think this puzzle is fantastic but
got your copy for free send me ten bucks and we'll be square ---
if you dont think its truly great---no obligation.
Here's my address:
Robert Carlson,319 Lunada Ct. Los Altos, CA,94022,(415)-941-0394
When you start be sure to read the README.DOC file on the disk
for instructions and more about the mathematics, programming and
system requirements of the Icosahedron.
Thanks for inquiring, thanks for the check, and Happy Solving!
Sincerely,
Robert Carlson
