CHAPTER 5
PAGE LAYOUT
PAGE LAYOUT Quiz Master 5.0
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Page Layout controls how your printed page will look for the
printed exam. With all the different types of printers on the
market today we thought it necessary to give you all the control
possible in laying out a page.
5.1 PAGE LAYOUT SETTINGS
Basically there are two type of printers, those that pull
the paper through the printer and those that push the paper
through the printer.
Pull type printers have the tractor or friction feed above
the print head and pull the paper through the printer. This way
the print head can be lined up exactly with the first line of the
page. These printers will print 66 lines on a page, but they
waste a blank page each time you want to formfeed and tear off
your copy.
Push type printers push the paper through the printer much
like a typewriter. They don't waste a page, but the print head is
always 1 to 6 lines down from the top of the page. With this
set-up there is no way to print a full 66 lines on each page.
(Laser printers fit in this category as they normally print only
60 lines per page, including the top and bottom margins.)
To minimize problems it is a good rule of thumb to set Lines
to Print to 60 for all printers. This is the Lines to Print
default setting. For Laser printers set the lines to print to the
front panel control, lines per page setting.
Eight lines per inch can be used to print more questions per
page, if your printer can be set-up for it and it is installed in
the Edit / Add Printer Codes screen.
Elite (12 characters per inch) can be used to make the lines
smaller and more compact, if your printer can be set-up for it
and it is installed in the Edit / Add Printer Codes screen. Used
in combination with eight lines per inch the page layout has a
professional appearance.
First determine if your printer pushes or pulls the paper
through the printer.
Push Type Printers:
8 Lines per Inch set Off, Lines per Page = 60.
8 Lines per Inch set On , Lines per Page = 80.
Elite (12 Characters Per Inch) set Off, Left Margin = 5.
(Elite Set off is normally 10 cpi.)
Elite (12 Characters Per Inch) set On , Left Margin = 12.
(This is so the printout is more centered on the page)
Top Margin Set to 0;
Bottom Margin Set to desired number of lines.
(Minimum bottom margin is 2 to leave room for page number)

5.1.1 Toggle 8 Lines/Inch
Selecting this topic will allow you to toggle between
printing an exam with 8 lines per inch or the standard 6 lines
per inch, if your printer is able to print in this mode.
Each time you select this topic the current mode will
change as shown on the bottom of the screen.
5.1.2 Toggle Elite (12 cpi)
Selecting this topic will allow you to toggle between
printing an exam in Elite (12 characters per inch) or standard
(10 characters per inch), if your printer is able to print in
this mode. Each time you select this topic the current mode will
change as shown on the bottom of the screen.
5.1.3 Top Margin
Selecting this topic will allow you to set the top margin,
or how many lines you wish to print before the page heading
begins. A window will appear and ask you to enter the new value
for the top margin.
5.1.4 Bottom Margin
This topic will allow you to set the bottom margin, or how
many blank lines you wish to print at the bottom of the page. At
least 2 lines are needed for the bottom margin to print the page
number. A window will appear and ask you to enter a new value for
the bottom margin.
5.1.5 Line To Print
Selecting this topic will allow you to set number of lines
to print per page. A window will appear and ask you to enter a
new value.
5.1.6 Left Margin
Selecting this topic will allow you to set the left
margin, or how many blank characters you wish to print before
printing a question. This helps to center the questions on a page
for Elite. A window will apear on the screen and ask you to enter
a number.

5.2 RUN TEST PRINT
Included with Quiz Master is a small test file to test all
your settings with your printer. When it prints it breaks up the
question between pages, but it will not do this when actually
printing an exam. The test print will print line by line and page
break according the settings in the page layout. If all is set
properly you should see the proper top margin, the proper bottom
margin, the proper left margin, and the proper number of lines
per page, with the page number at the bottom. The page Number
will always print on line 2 of the Bottom Margin.
5.3 SAVING THE PAGE LAYOUT
Saving the page layout will save the printer name and all
your page layout settings. When saving the page layout, save it
to the default name QM.PLY . The extension .PLY is added
automatically. If you save the file to QM then Quiz Master will
automatically load the page layout when Print Exams is selected
from the main menu.
If you want to keep different page layouts on file for
different printers, then you can save it to a different file
name. Each time you select Print Exams, you must Retrieve your
other Page Layout before printing.
5.4 RETRIEVING A PAGE LAYOUT
Selecting this topic will allow you to retrieve a previously
saved page layout setting. It will also bring in the printer file
that accompanies the page layout. A directory window will appear
showing all the possible page layouts available.
5.5 HELP
Select this topic for complete on screen instructions.
