CP FIELD (COMMAND, PAUSE):
This field is used to flag an ITEM to do one or both of the following:
(C) PC Security will pause before running the ITEM and prompt the user
for a commandline option for the program about to be run.
(P) PC Security will pause after running the ITEM (hit any key to
continue). Use this f lag when you want to preserve the screen of the
ITEM so that it can be read before returning to the MENU SCREEN. This
is useful when calling programs that list information to the screen
and then exit to DOS. An example would be a program like TREE.EXE (a
DOS command that lists the tree of a drive). Using the (P) flag would
cause the TREE information to to remain on the screen until the user
pressed any key, then the MENU SCREEN would appear.
*NOTE - Use Alt+C and Alt+P to toggle (C) and (P). You cannot type anything
in this field. You can only change this field with Alt+C, Alt+P,
and Alt+E (erase field).
(continued)
*NOTE - The CP field is also used by PC Security to flag ITEMS and MENUS that
exceed the maximum number of ITEMS and MENUS allowed. For example,
if there are more than 100 ITEMS in a MENU, PC Security will put
(OI) in the CP field so that you can easily identify which ITEMS
PC Security will ignore. If there are more than 20 MENUS created,
(OM) will be put in the CP field of any ITEM that is in a MENU that
PC Security will not list. (See PROGRAM LIMITATIONS on page 15.)
CMD FIELD (COMMANDLINE):
This field is used to program commandline parameters for an ITEM. On
the Edit Screen this field will contain either (Y) or (N).
A (Y) in this field indicates that a commandline parameter has been
programmed for this ITEM. When the cursor is positioned on this field,
the commandline that is programmed will be shown in a window in the
lower, center of the screen. Changes can be made to the commandline at
this time.
(continued)
If (N) is in this field, there is no commandline programmed for this
ITEM. If you want to program a commandline for this ITEM, simply
position the cursor on the CMD field and ENTER a (Y). A window in the
lower center of the screen will appear and you can enter commandline
parameters for this ITEM.
FILENAME FIELD :
This field contains the name of the program or .BAT file that will run
when this ITEM is selected. You don't have to put an extension after
the program name if it's a .COM or .EXE program.
If it's a .BAS program, please leave the .BAS extension after the
program name so that PC Security can identify that it is a BASIC program.
PC Security will call the BASIC INTERPRETER so that the BASIC program
can run, but it has to know that the program is a BASIC program.
BASIC PROGRAMS WILL NOT RUN IF THE .BAS EXTENSION IS LEFT OFF!
If the file is a .BAT file, PC Security will run it even if the
extension is left off, but it may be possible for the user to
CTRL-BREAK out of the .BAT and into DOS. If the .BAT extension
is present, PC Security will take measures to prevent the user from
CTRL-BREAKing to DOS.
PC Security will check to see if the FILENAME that you put in this
field actually exists in the PATH that was entered in the PATH FIELD.
If a PATH has not been entered yet, an error message will be displayed.
When you enter a program name without an extension, PC Security will
check to see if a .COM or .EXE program by that name exists in the
PATH. We don't check for a .BAS or .BAT exist unless you put the
extension on because we need to know if it's either of these types.
PATH FIELD :
This field contains the DOS PATH to the program that will run when
this ITEM is selected. You will notice that when the cursor is on
this field the FILENAME field disappears. This is to provide enough
room on the screen for a PATH up to 30 characters long. Notice when
you are in the PATH or FILE fields, that the PATH header changes colors
to let you know which field you are in.
PC Security will check to make sure that the PATH you entered is
a valid PATH, and if a FILENAME is present, that the program exists
in this path.
MENU FIELD :
This field contains the name for the MENU that you want this ITEM
to show up in. Up to 20 different MENU NAMES are allowed. If
there are more than 20 MENU NAMES in the Main Menu Data File,
PC Security will flag all of the ITEMS that do not have a
MENU NAME of one of the first 20 MENUS in the file.
You can either type in the MENU NAME or you can use the F-Keys
to enter pre-set MENU NAMES. You don't have to be in the MENU
NAME field to use the F-Keys. If you want to reconfigure an F-
Key, use Alt+F(1 to 10) to select the key you want to reconfigure
and type in the MENU NAME you want.
For instance, if there are a total of 20 ITEMS in the Main Menu
Data File (see option F1 on the first Menu Utilities Screen),
and each item has a different MENU NAME then each MENU listed will
have 1 ITEM in it. If you add another ITEM with a new MENU NAME
(which would be the 21st MENU) PC Security would flag this ITEM
by putting an (OM) in the CP field and this 21st MENU would not
show up in the PC Security Menu program. To make this ITEM appear,
you need to enter a MENU NAME that is the same as one of the first
20 MENUS or delete one of the first 20 MENUS.
The Main Menu Data File is searched from top to bottom. New ITEMS
are added to the bottom of the file.
ITEM FIELD :
This field contains the name that you give to a program for
use in PC Security. It can be the name of the program itself,
or a name (or short description) that you can recognize as
being that program. For instance, if you wanted to put PC Security
in you menu, the program (actually it's a .BAT file in this
instance) you want to call is " CONTROL.BAT ". You could use
" CONTROL.BAT " as the ITEM NAME, but you would probably want
to use " PC Security " or even " A Neat Menu Program " for the
ITEM NAME.
LEV FIELD (LEVEL) :
This field contains the LEVEL at which you want this ITEM to start
showing up in MENUS. 100 is the highest LEVEL and 1 is the lowest.
If the LEVEL is 1, then the ITEM will show up for anyone who signs on
to PC Security with a SECURITY LEVEL of 1 or higher. (That would be
anybody who signs on because 1 is the lowest level a user can have.)
If an ITEM has a LEVEL of 50, then only users who have a SECURITY
LEVEL of 50 or higher would be able to see and use that ITEM.
This is a very important function of PC Security as it enables you
to easily control who has access to any ITEMS that are configured
into PC Security. Give an ITEM a LEVEL less than or equal to the
USER LEVEL that you want the ITEM to start appearing in PC Security.
For example:
If you have a program that you don't want anyone except
yourself (Security Officer) to be able to run, give that ITEM
a LEVEL of 100. It won't appear in any MENU for any USER except
yourself (if you are the only one with a LEVEL of 100).
If you have a program that you want anyone to be available to
anyone who signs on, give that ITEM a LEVEL of 1.
If you have a program that you only want certain people to be
able to use, give it a LEVEL that is equal to the lowest LEVEL
of the USER with the lowest LEVEL that you want to be able to
select this ITEM.
Joe has a LEVEL of 100
Sam has a LEVEL of 75
Bob has a LEVEL of 50
Bill has a LEVEL of 25
If the ITEM "ProgramX" has a LEVEL of 60 then Sam and Joe will
be able to use ProgramX, but Bob and Bill won't even know that
ProgramX exists because it won't show up in any of their MENUS.
*NOTE - The LEVEL can be any number between 1 and 100. Position the cursor
in the LEVEL FIELD and type the LEVEL you want. Or, you can use the
Shift-F(7 - 10) Keys. They are set up as 25, 50, 75, and 100 and
cannot be reprogrammed. The Shift-FKeys can be used from any field
to change the LEVEL.
MODE :
The MODE indicator is used to keep you informed of of which MODE the
editor is in. The PC Security Editor has two MODES, ADD MODE and
EDIT MODE. In EDIT MODE you can cursor through the ITEMS and edit
the fields. ADD MODE is used to add new ITEMS. Use Alt+A to toggle
between ADD and EDIT MODE.
When you toggle to ADD MODE, the cursor moves to an empty ITEM field
below the last ITEM. The MENU, ITEM, PATH and FILENAME fields must
be entered before a new ITEM is saved. When these fields are filled
in, the cursor will again move to an empty ITEM field and you can
either enter another ITEM or toggle to the EDIT MODE.
ALT KEYS :
Alt+A - Toggles between ADD and EDIT modes (see MODE on page 11).
Alt+C - Puts a C flag in the CP field (see CP FIELD on page 2).
Alt+D - Flags an ITEM to be deleted.
Alt+E - Erases the field that the cursor is in.
Alt+F - Calls the PCS Tree function for help finding files on a disk.
(See PCS Tree on page 14.)
Alt+H - Calls this help document.
Alt+I - Toggles the info window in the lower right portion of the screen.
Alt+P - Puts a P flag in the CP field (see CP FIELD on page 2).
Alt+FKey - Reprogram an FKey (MENU NAME). Hold the Alt Key and press
the FKey of the MENU NAME that you want to reprogram.
SHIFT+FKEYS :
The Shft+FKeys can be used from any field to change the LEVEL of an
ITEM. These keys are pre-programmed and cannot be changed. If you
want to change an ITEMS LEVEL to a LEVEL other than a pre-programmed
Shft+FKey LEVEL you must move the cursor to the LEVEL FIELD and type
the LEVEL that you want.
FKEYS (F1 - F10) :
These keys can be programmed with MENU NAMES to enable you to quickly
enter your MENU NAMES. The FKeys can be used from any filed to change
the MENU NAME of an ITEM. They can be reprogrammed by using the
Alt+FKey. Press the ALT key and the FKey that you want to program
then type the MENU NAME that you want to program.
PCS TREE (ALT+F) :
PCS Tree is the function that will help you locate and tag files on
your disk(s). It can be used while editing an individual MENU, or
while editing the Main Menu File (F1). It will automatically create
a record for each tagged file and enter it into the Main Menu File
in the proper format. All you need to do is change the ITEM NAME
if you want.
This function works in both EDIT and ADD MODE (see MODE on page 11).
However, it works a-little differently in each MODE.
If you select ALT+F while in ADD MODE, you can browse through your
drive(s) and directories and select as many ITEMS (files) as you like.
When you exit (ESC) this function, all of the tagged ITEMS (files) will
be entered into the menu files. The ITEM NAME of each record will be
the same as the FILE name.
If you select ALT+F while in EDIT MODE, you can browse through your
drive(s) and directories, but you can only tag one file. As soon as
you tag a file, the information about that file will replace the
information that was in the record you were editing when ALT+F was
selected.
