***** WELCOME TO PC SECURITY *****
by...
Build-A-Matic
You will find that this works basically the same way as most other menu
programs. You choose an option and PC Security calls the program for
you, so you don't have to go around changing directories & looking for
programs that go buzzing up your screen a hundred miles an hour when
you list a directory. PC Security "gets out of the way" (is not memory
resident), runs the program that you chose, then calls itself back up.
PC SECURITY can call .COM, .EXE, .BAT, and even BASIC (.BAS) programs.
You will be returned to after running your programs by "CONTROL.BAT".
"CONTROL.BAT" is the name of the main BAT that runs PC Security. (We
figured that there were already enough BATs out there called "MENU".)
CONTROL.BAT is used to start PC Security at the correct section of the
program.
PC Security also has a few other features. It can act as security
for your PC (Hence "PC SECURITY"). You have the option of turning
this function on or off.
The security portion of this program is used for two functions. One,
already mentioned, permits you to limit who can use your PC. (I use
it to keep the kids off sometimes, so I know it'll be free when I want
to use it <grin>.)
But another, more important feature of the security function is to
determine WHO can access WHAT files. It does this using a LEVEL
system. You can assign your users a LEVEL from 1 to 100. This LEVEL
will determine what menus they will see, and what items in those menus
they will see. (Your kids won't even know that you have the latest
version of Leisure Suit Larry out there, so they won't keep bugging
you, trying to find out what Mr. Ed's first name was or what J. F.
Kennedy drove.)
Most good menu programs have to be configured (this is one of them).
You have to create a data base for the program consisting of the name
of the program that you want the menu program to call (WHEEL.BAS),
the name of the drive and directory that it's in, what you want to call
this program on your menu screen (WHEEL OF FORTUNE), What you want to
call the menu that it's in etc. This can be very time consuming and
frustrating...
Another feature of PC Security that I, personally like, is it's
automated configuration. You don't have to remember the name and
extension of your programs or even what directory they are in. All
you have to do is be able to recognize them (so you'll know what to
call it as a menu item). You don't even have to remember your directory
names! We've tried to automate this as much as possible, but you will
still have to fill in some blanks.
Well, actually you don't HAVE to do ANYTHING after running the automated
disk search function for PC SECURITY to run. But you will find that it
will be easier to identify programs if you split them up into menus.
And you will want to unclutter things by deleting those inevitable,
miscelaneous .EXE & .COM files that are used by your various programs.
Once you have run the "Autimated Disk Search Function", you will have
the option of editing the results. Actually, you will find yourself
right in the EDIT MODE of the PCS Menu Editor, but you can use the ESC
button to back out of it of you want. In the Editor, you can change
the MENU NAME (name of the menu that the item will appear in), the
ITEM NAME (what you want to call this selection in the menu), the
FILE NAME (best leave this one alone, but if you want to go ahead and
change it, have fun!), the PATH (drive and directory that the program
is in)...(best leave this one alone too, if you expect PC Security to
ever find your program!), and the LEVEL (the level at which this item
will start showing up in the menu).
All these fields will be filled in for you by the Automated Disk Search.
The MENU NAME will default to "NEW ITEM". The ITEM NAME will default to
the file name without the extension (WHEELS.BAS = WHEELS). The FILE
NAME will default to the file name & extension. The PATH will default
to the path to the program (drive & directory). You can always go back
and change things so don't worry if you make a mistake... The worse
thing that can happen is that you will make a menu selection and find
yourself back in this program. If you leave the FILE NAME and PATH
fields alone, this should never happen.

***** PC SECURITY MENU FUNCTIONS *****
PCS Menu allows you twenty (20) main menu items and one hundred (100)
sub menu's per main menu item.
From PCS Menu you may select a sub menu and then run any item in that
sub menu. With Security turned on a user will see only thoes items that
are equal to or below their security level.
A user level of 100 will have full use of PC Security unless security is
turned off. If security is turned off you will need to know the passwords
for File Maintenance and Exit to DOS. The default passwords will be the
same for everything untill you chance them and they are "SECURITY PASS".
While in PCS Menu you may use the following F-KEYS:
F-1 - File Maintenance Allows you access to PCS Ctrl which can
take you to Security, Congiguration, and
the Main Menu Editor.
F-10 - Exit To DOS Allows you to exit the program to DOS or
just shell to DOS and return with EXIT.
While in PCS Menu you may use the following ALT-KEYS:
(* Caps Lock and Num Lock Must Be Off and the user level must
be at level 100 unless security is turned off)
ALT-Q - Quick DOS Commands You may do anything you want from here
except Delete, Copy, Format, Command,
Break, Rename, or Type.
ALT-H - Help Read This File...
ALT-C - Ext Command Allows you to pass paramaters to the
program that you are about to run.
ALT-P - Pause Will pause after running a selected
program before returning to PCS Menu.
ALT-T - Trap Will Pause before running a selected
program and show you the contents of
BATCH.BAT which is used to run a selected
program and MAINMENU.DAT information.
