#CROSSROADS
Of all the types of road junctions you will encounter
crossroads are reckoned to be accident black spots.
This is because of the volume of traffic, complexity
of junction lanes and the danger of facing vehicles
who are turning right when we are turning right.
When approaching crossroads consider these:
- are there lanes? Which lane should you be in?
- what do the road signs tell you about directions?
- are there road markings you have to follow?
- are the traffic lights now turning red or green?
- are there pedestrians about to cross your lane?
Click the Ok button to start this junction section.
#SESSION - 1
TURNING LEFT AT A CONTROLLED CROSSROADS
In this session you will turn left at the crossroads.
Apart from getting in to the left lane and obeying the
lights, the one hazard to turning left is the oncoming
traffic that turns right in front of you.
INSTRUCTIONS
TURN RIGHT on to the next side road and then ahead
will be a traffic-lights controlled crossroads. You are
to approach the crossroads with the M.S.M and P.S.L
routines: checking mirrors and signalling left. In
this session, TURN LEFT at the CROSSROADS.
Click the Ok button to start this junction section.
#ASSESS THE JUNCTION
There is low visibility either side of the junction and
so you are to approach cautiously, slow the car and
position it in the left lane ready for turning left.
Be aware of the traffic lights that can change suddenly,
as can the traffic situation.
Look both ways before proceeding with the turn and
be aware of any oncoming vehicle that might cross
your route at the junction.
Click the Ok button to start this M.S.M manoeuvre.
#SESSION - 1 COMPLETE
Well done! You have successfully turned left at a
controlled crossroads without a driving incident.
Remember to observe all the road signs, markings
and signals at a crossroads. Mentally note and be
aware of all current hazards, where they are, and if
moving, where they intend to go.
Remember also when turning left, the main hazard is
that of oncoming traffic turning right and crossing
your route in front of you.
Click the Ok button to start the next manoeuvre.
#SESSION - 2
PASSING STRAIGHT OVER A CONTROLLED CROSSROADS
All of the previous issues about approaching and
being aware of traffic and hazards apply to this
session. Also there is the hazard of oncoming traffic
turning right and crossing our route.
INSTRUCTIONS
Approach the junction with the usual M.S.M and P.S.L
routines, keeping left and looking both ways at the
junction. Do not signal but drive STRAIGHT ACROSS
the crossroads.
Click the Ok button to start this second session
#ASSESS THE JUNCTION
Ahead is the same crossroads junction approached
from a different direction to the previous session.
You are instructed to drive STRAIGHT ACROSS this
junction without turning to the left or to the right.
The junction is approached with caution, as oncom-
ing vehicles that turn right at the junction will cross
our path.
Click the Ok button to start the approach to the
junction with the M.S.M manoeuvre and checking of
the mirrors.
#SESSION - 2 COMPLETE
Congratulations! You have completed the straight on
manoeuvre across this crossroads junction.
In this manoeuvre you kept left and did not signal.
Before, at and after the junction you made good all
round observations, observing signals and the traffic
flow.
The next crossroads junction manoeuvre is the most
hazardous, complex and potentially dangerous one -
turning right.

#SESSION - 3
TURNING RIGHT AT A CONTROLLED CROSSROADS
There are two ways to turn right at a crossroads:
- facing any vehicles that are turning right
- going behind any vehicles that are turning right
Good eye contact and clear signalling is necessary
if a mid-junction collision is to be avoided.
INSTRUCTIONS
Approach the crossroads with the M.S.M routine, get
into the right hand land, SIGNAL and TURN RIGHT.
Please do view and study the accompanying video
Click the Ok button to start the driving session
#ASSESS THE JUNCTION
At a crossroads where there are no central markings
on the road or signals to indicate when to turn right,
the centre of the junction is a potential collision area
and should be approached - cautiously.
Here we want to turn right - which means crossing
the route of oncoming traffic and potentially facing
oncoming vehicles who are themselves turning right.
We may well have to halt in the middle of the junction
and wait before moving off with the full moving off
procedures.
Click the Ok button to continue the third session
#SECTION COMPLETE
Well done on completing the crossroads section.
In this section you considered the issues, the traffic
flow and the potential hazards around the controlled
crossroads.
You completed the sessions of turning left, passing
straight across and turning right at the junction.
There are many variations in road layout, signals, and
traffic flow in the crossroads, but all of them require
caution and good all round observation.

#ROUNDABOUTS
Roundabouts are like crossroads but with a central
island. Unlike other junctions they have the purpose
of keeping the traffic flowing.
Roundabouts have multiple entrances and exits and so
it is very important to observe and assess all of their
signs, signals, road markings and traffic situation.
The principal rule to always remember when entering
a roundabout is - always give way to the right. Getting
into the correct road lane and staying in it through the
roundabout is another vital routine to maintain.

#SESSION - 1
TURNING LEFT AT A ROUNDABOUT
After TURNING RIGHT at the next side road you will be
on the roundabout approach road. Always approach a
roundabout with the M.S.M routine and apply the P.S.L
routine by getting into the correct lane.
INSTRUCTIONS
TURN RIGHT at the next side road then approach the
roundabout by checking mirrors and signalling LEFT.
Leave the roundabout at the FIRST exit you come to.
Study the video and the route map that is shown next.
Click the Ok button to start the left turn manoeuvre.
#ASSESS THE JUNCTION
Ahead is the roundabout. There are no traffic lights
and your approach will be that of a give-way junction.
This means you will not necessarily need to stop
before the roundabout.
Assess the traffic both ON the roundabout and the
traffic joining the roundabout as you draw close to it.
If it is not 100% safe to continue, then stop and wait
for the roundabout traffic to pass.
Stay in the left lane. When you exit the roundabout,
glance in the rear view and left door mirrors.
Click the Ok button to continue with the manoeuvre.
#SESSION - 1 COMPLETE
Well Done! You have successfully turned left at a
roundabout through using the M.S.M / P.S.L routines,
giving way to the right and keeping left throughout
the junction.
Remember that all roundabouts are designed to keep
the traffic flowing. So observing the traffic on and
around the junction as you pass through it is a vital
part of the driving manoeuvre.
In the next session we will complete the manoeuvre
of going straight across the roundabout.
Click the Ok button to continue with this section
#SESSION - 2
GOING STRAIGHT ON AT A ROUNDABOUT
This time we take the second roundabout exit and so
effectively go straight across. Traffic hazards may be
at the first exit and in the right hand lane.
INSTRUCTIONS
Approach the junction with the M.S.M manoeuvre by
checking mirrors, slowing down, moving the car to
the left while looking both ways. Be ready to give way
to any roundabout traffic.
Study the video and the route map that is shown next.
Click the Ok button to begin the next manoeuvre.
#ASSESS THE JUNCTION
We should keep to the left lane around the roundabout
and signal left after the first exit to indicate that we
are leaving via the seco
