  1. #SECTION BRIEFING
  2. In this section we continue the driving session
  3. with a look at the fundamental driving skill called
  4. M.S.M. This is short for Mirror-Signal-Manoeuvre.
  5.  
  6. In conjunction with the M.S.M routine we will look at
  7. the P.S.L routine. This is short for Position, Speed
  8. and Look.
  9.  
  10. These routines are two of the most important driving
  11. skills that you will need to learn and to master to
  12. become a safe and proficient driver in all situations.

  16. THE MIRROR SIGNAL MANOEUVRE ROUTINE
  17.  
  18. The Mirror-Signal-Manoeuvre routine, or M.S.M for
  19. short, is carried out many, many times throughout a
  20. journey. M.S.M is a fundamental driving skill. Because
  21. it is so important we are introducing it at this early
  22. stage of training.

  24. INSTRUCTIONS
  25. Drive to the end of this road, by applying the M.S.M
  26. routine, and turn left at the Give Way junction. You will
  27. now be guided through the whole process.

  31. ASSESSING THE ROAD BEHIND
  32.  
  33. We are going to change speed (slow down) and also
  34. change direction at the junction.  We will begin this
  35. manoeuvre with the M.S.M routine.  We will start the
  36. M.S.M routine by looking in the mirrors. But why?

  38. INSTRUCTIONS
  39. Look in your mirrors to ASSESS the traffic behind you.
  40. You will need to signal left as other traffic and
  41. pedestrians will need to know your intentions.  Be
  42. careful not to signal too early or too late.

  46. You have looked in your mirrors and assessed the
  47. road situation behind.  You have recognised that a
  48. vehicle is following you and that the driver needs to
  49. know which direction you are about to take.
  50. What should you do?

  52. INSTRUCTIONS
  53. Switch your left indicator on to show you are going to
  54. turn left. But the indicator doesn't want to be put on
  55. too early as the driver following might think you are
  56. going to pull in beside the road.  But they WILL need
  57. a clear and decisive signal from you.

  61. Now we come to the manoeuvre part of the M.S.M
  62. routine. You have assessed the road ahead and seen
  63. that the junction is clear of vehicles before you.

  65. INSTRUCTIONS
  66. Begin to SLOW DOWN by clicking the brake pedal icon.
  67. You intend to turn left and the road is clear. Where
  68. should you be steering the car towards?
  69.  
  70. To turn left you should begin to STEER SLIGHTLY LEFT
  71. on this road in order to be in the correct position
  72. by the time you get to the junction.

  76. Well done! You have completed the first session which
  77. introduced you to the M.S.M. routine.

  79. In that session you learnt about the importance of
  80. using your mirrors,  deciding on and giving a clear
  81. signal and manoeuvring the car ready to make a turn.

  83. In the next session you will learn about the P.S.L or
  84. Position Speed Look routine.  The M.S.M and P.S.L
  85. routines are basic driving skills that the test examiner
  86. will be looking to see you perform correctly at all
  87. times and in all situations.

  91. THE POSITION SPEED LOOK (P.S.L) ROUTINE
  92.  
  93. The P.S.L routine is broken-down into three parts
  94. of the basic driving manoeuvre you will complete
  95. whenever there is a change of speed or direction.
  96. The manoeuvre part of the M.S.M routine is in fact
  97. a Position Speed Look routine.

  99. INSTRUCTIONS
  100. You are instructed to TURN right and exit this road at
  101. the next right side road junction with a P.S.L routine.
  102. You will be guided through the whole process.

  106. STEER THE CAR TO THE CORRECT ROAD POSITION
  107.  
  108. The first thing to do in the P.S.L routine is to steer
  109. the car to the correct road position so that you are
  110. ready for the turning manoeuvre at the junction.

  112. INSTRUCTIONS
  113. Smoothly and gradually steer the car to THIS SIDE of
  114. the MIDDLE of the road.  You are lining the car up to
  115. turn right and so must have it ready to go across
  116. oncoming traffic.

  120. ADJUST THE SPEED OF THE CAR
  121.  
  122. The next step of the P.S.L routine is to adjust the
  123. speed of the car to suit the turn you are about to do.
  124. The right turn is quite sharp and the usual speed of 12
  125. mph (15 mph max) would be appropriate here.

  127. INSTRUCTIONS
  128. Smoothly and gradually SLOW THE CAR by clicking the
  129. brake icon and adjusting the speed down to a level
  130. that is suitable for the right turn.

  134. LOOK AHEAD TO ASSESS THE SITUATION
  135.  
  136. The final step of the P.S.L routine is to look ahead
  137. and to assess the road situation. Is the road clear
  138. enough for you to continue or will you need to stop?

  141. Assess the road, decide if you can now turn right
  142. without stopping.  You will need to:-
  143.  [1] Assess this road and the new road ahead
  144.  [2] Decide what to do: whether to stop or continue
  145.  [3] Act clearly and decisively upon your decision

  150. have now completed this first Module 3 driving
  151. section.

  153. In this training section you were introduced to the
  154. mirror-signal-manoeuvre routine,  and the closely
  155. associated position-speed-look routine.

  157. Both routines can be applied to a wide variety of road
  158. situations and driving manoeuvres.  By carefully
  159. following their steps they help you to drive in a safe
  160. and proficient manner.

  164. LEFT  HAND  BENDS
  165. This section of Module 3 deals with road bends and
  166. the M.S.M and P.S.L routines.

  168. INSTRUCTIONS
  169. You are instructed to CONTINUE along this road, and
  170. carefully STEER around the two blind left bends.
  171. After moving off we will assess the bend and do the
  172. P.S.L routine.  (P)position the car and adjust the
  173. (S)speed for the safe and correct approach to the
  174. bend, (L)look ahead and in the mirrors as you drive
  175. through the bend.

  179. It is important to assess a bend before reaching it
  180. and to apply the Position-Speed-Look routine to it.

  182. Consider the issues of this bend:
  183.  - it is towards the left, of moderate sharpness
  184.  - it has low visibility because of a high hedge
  185.  - are there any obstructions on the bend to see?
  186.  - will the road surface and camber give problems?
  187.  - (P)position the car in the middle of this lane
  188.  - the sharp bend sign tells us to reduce (S)speed
  189.  - we should (L)look out for any hazards around it
  190.

  194. Lets assess this second bend before reaching it.

  196. Consider the issues of this bend:
  197.  - it is towards the left, of moderate sharpness
  198.  - it has low visibility because of a left hedge
  199.  - if there is a car parked on the far side, it
  200.    will make oncoming traffic move onto our side
  201.  - (P)position the car in the middle of this lane
  202.  - the sharp bend sign tells us to reduce (S)speed
  203.  - (L)look out for any oncoming traffic on the bend
  204.  - there is housing: look out for any pedestrians
  205.    and the possibility of hidden parked vehicles
  206.

  224. RIGHT  HAND  BENDS
