  1. #DRIVING  IN  REVERSE
  2. Reversing requires practice -  to get the feel of it, to
  3. learn the car boundaries,  and to get your full driving
  4. confidence up.  Before reversing ask yourself:
  5.  - is this a safe place to reverse in?
  6.  - is this a convenient place to do it?
  7.  - is the manoeuvre within the law here?
  8.  - will I be able to fully control my car here?
  9.  
  10. Remember these rules for driving in reverse:
  11.  - always a slow moving car but with brisk steering
  12.  - to turn the car towards the kerb, turn the wheel
  13.    towards the kerb (or steer left), and vice versa.
  14.

  17. REVERSING INTO A SIDE ROAD - EXTERNAL VIEW
  18.  
  19. First we will do this manoeuvre with external camera
  20. views to get an idea of the road positions. This is a
  21. test run only to demonstrate where the car should go.

  23. INSTRUCTIONS
  24. Drive the car up to the RED ARROW, making sure the
  25. centre of the car's bonnet is in line with the centre
  26. of the arrow. Select reverse gear, and steer the car
  27. so that it follows the kerb around into the side road.

  32. GUIDELINES FOR REVERSING
  33.  
  34. Remember these guidelines for driving in reverse:
  35.  - always start and continue reversing with all round
  36.     observations, looking in mirrors and blind spots
  37.  - always drive the car with a low speed,  but turn
  38.     and correct the steering wheel briskly
  39.  - to turn the car rear towards the kerb, turn the
  40.     steering wheel towards the kerb, and vice versa
  41.  - when the bonnet of the car swings into the road it
  42.     becomes a significant hazard to passing traffic
  43.  - always look behind for any hazards in the way
  44.

  47. REVERSING INTO A SIDE ROAD  -  IN-CAR VIEW

  49. Now we will do this manoeuvre from the driver's point
  50. of view, after having seen what we must do to drive
  51. and steer the car correctly into the left side road.

  53. INSTRUCTIONS
  54. Drive to the RED ARROW with the M.S.M/P.S.L routines.
  55. Always look and assess the side road as you pass it.
  56. Reverse and steer the car carefully into the side road.
  57. Reverse the car back to the red arrow in the side road.
  58. Continually look around and assess the roads.

  63. left side road both by a demonstration mode using
  64. some external camera views,  and then afterwards in
  65. full driving mode from behind the steering wheel.

  68. control and a careful driving approach to the whole
  69. manoeuvre was required for a safe completion of the
  70. reversing manoeuvre.

  77. REVERSING INTO A DRIVEWAY  -  EXTERNAL VIEWS

  79. Just beyond the lamppost is a driveway which you are
  80. about to reverse into. This session is about steering
  81. accuracy.  The garden walls come up to the edge of
  82. the driveway.  You must avoid hitting them.

  84. INSTRUCTIONS
  85. Drive the car forward up to the RED ARROW.  Then you
  86. should select reverse gear, and drive the car back very
  87. slowly and carefully, steering it into the driveway.

  92. GUIDELINES FOR REVERSING

  110. driver's point of view. Judging just when to steer the
  111. car rear towards the pavement so that the car swings
  112. neatly into the driveway - is the critical issue.

  114. INSTRUCTIONS
  115. Drive the car forward to the RED ARROW.  Do a full
  116. moving off procedures with reverse gear selection.
  117. Slowly and carefully reverse and steer the car left
  118. into the driveway.

  123. reversing sessions to finish this first section of
  124. module four.

  126. In this section you reversed into a left side road and
  127. a driveway of a house. In both cases you learnt about
  128. the car's road position by taking test sessions in
  129. which you were given external camera views.

  132. the car around in the road.

  137. Turning the car around in the road using forward and
  138. reverse gears is probably one of the most involved
  139. manoeuvres that you will do and is best learnt in the
  140. car.  Ask your instructor to demonstrate it to you.

  142. In this section we begin by showing you a video of
  143. the manoeuvre.  Then there will be a demonstration
  144. in three parts.  Lastly you will be guided through the
  145. turning manoeuvre itself.

  152. CAR  TURNING  DEMONSTRATION
  153. You have just driven into a cul-de-sac and wish to
  154. turn the car around.  You have seen that there are no
  155. side roads and that the road is wide enough to turn
  156. the car around in.

  158. You have stopped the car beside the road, with the
  159. gears in neutral and the handbrake applied.  Now you
  160. will look, assess and decide if the road is clear of
  161. obstructions and ready for the turning manoeuvre.

  167. THE  CAR  TURNING  EXERCISE
  168. Now it is your turn to do the same manoeuvre.  You
  169. should remember to always drive slowly,  to turn the
  170. wheel briskly,  and maintain all round observations.

  173.  - have full and safe control of the car at all times
  174.  - do not allow the car wheels to touch the pavements
  175.  - drive slowly and turn the steering wheel briskly
  176.  - make all-round observations throughout the turn
  177.  - wait for vehicles or pedestrians to move away
  178.

  182. CAR  TURNING  DEMONSTRATION  PART  -  3

  184. The handbrake is put on, first gear is selected and all
  185. round observations made for a clear road.  Then the
  186. handbrake is released, clutch raised,  and as the car
  187. moves,  the steering wheel is turned to the right
  188. bringing the car in line with the road.

  190. As the car lines up with the road the steering wheel
  191. is returned to the central position. As the car moves
  192. away from the turning point in the road, the mirrors
  193. are checked.

  198. should remember to always drive slowly,  to turn the
