#DRIVING IN REVERSE
Reversing requires practice - to get the feel of it, to
learn the car boundaries, and to get your full driving
confidence up. Before reversing ask yourself:
- is this a safe place to reverse in?
- is this a convenient place to do it?
- is the manoeuvre within the law here?
- will I be able to fully control my car here?
Remember these rules for driving in reverse:
- always a slow moving car but with brisk steering
- to turn the car towards the kerb, turn the wheel
towards the kerb (or steer left), and vice versa.
Click the Ok button to continue with the first session.
#SESSION - 1
REVERSING INTO A SIDE ROAD - EXTERNAL VIEW
First we will do this manoeuvre with external camera
views to get an idea of the road positions. This is a
test run only to demonstrate where the car should go.
INSTRUCTIONS
Drive the car up to the RED ARROW, making sure the
centre of the car's bonnet is in line with the centre
of the arrow. Select reverse gear, and steer the car
so that it follows the kerb around into the side road.
Please view and study the accompanying video first.
Click the Ok button to begin the reversing session.
#SESSION - 1
GUIDELINES FOR REVERSING
Remember these guidelines for driving in reverse:
- always start and continue reversing with all round
observations, looking in mirrors and blind spots
- always drive the car with a low speed, but turn
and correct the steering wheel briskly
- to turn the car rear towards the kerb, turn the
steering wheel towards the kerb, and vice versa
- when the bonnet of the car swings into the road it
becomes a significant hazard to passing traffic
- always look behind for any hazards in the way
Click the Ok button to start the reversing process
#SESSION - 2
REVERSING INTO A SIDE ROAD - IN-CAR VIEW
Now we will do this manoeuvre from the driver's point
of view, after having seen what we must do to drive
and steer the car correctly into the left side road.
INSTRUCTIONS
Drive to the RED ARROW with the M.S.M/P.S.L routines.
Always look and assess the side road as you pass it.
Reverse and steer the car carefully into the side road.
Reverse the car back to the red arrow in the side road.
Continually look around and assess the roads.
Click the Ok button to begin the reversing session
#SESSION - 2 COMPLETE
Well done! You have succeeded in reversing in to a
left side road both by a demonstration mode using
some external camera views, and then afterwards in
full driving mode from behind the steering wheel.
You have learnt that all round observations, good car
control and a careful driving approach to the whole
manoeuvre was required for a safe completion of the
reversing manoeuvre.
Ask your driving instructor how you can learn to
judge this reversing manoeuvre.

#SESSION - 3
REVERSING INTO A DRIVEWAY - EXTERNAL VIEWS
Just beyond the lamppost is a driveway which you are
about to reverse into. This session is about steering
accuracy. The garden walls come up to the edge of
the driveway. You must avoid hitting them.
INSTRUCTIONS
Drive the car forward up to the RED ARROW. Then you
should select reverse gear, and drive the car back very
slowly and carefully, steering it into the driveway.
Click the Ok button to start the new reversing session
#SESSION - 3
GUIDELINES FOR REVERSING
Here are some guidelines for driving in reverse:
- always start and continue reversing with all round
observations, looking in mirrors and blind spots
- drive the car with a low speed, but turn the
steering wheel briskly in the correct direction
- turn the car rear towards the kerb by turning the
steering wheel towards the kerb, and vice versa
- when the bonnet of the car swings into the road it
becomes a significant hazard to passing traffic
- look behind and wait for any pedestrian hazards
Click the Ok button to start the reversing process
#SESSION - 4
REVERSING INTO A DRIVEWAY - IN-CAR VIEW
This time we will perform the manoeuvre from the
driver's point of view. Judging just when to steer the
car rear towards the pavement so that the car swings
neatly into the driveway - is the critical issue.
INSTRUCTIONS
Drive the car forward to the RED ARROW. Do a full
moving off procedures with reverse gear selection.
Slowly and carefully reverse and steer the car left
into the driveway.
Click the Ok button to start the reversing manoeuvre
#SECTION COMPLETE
Well Done! You have successfully completed all of the
reversing sessions to finish this first section of
module four.
In this section you reversed into a left side road and
a driveway of a house. In both cases you learnt about
the car's road position by taking test sessions in
which you were given external camera views.
The next section of module four is all about turning
the car around in the road.
Click the Ok button to continue with the next section.
#TURNING AROUND
Turning the car around in the road using forward and
reverse gears is probably one of the most involved
manoeuvres that you will do and is best learnt in the
car. Ask your instructor to demonstrate it to you.
In this section we begin by showing you a video of
the manoeuvre. Then there will be a demonstration
in three parts. Lastly you will be guided through the
turning manoeuvre itself.
Please make sure you view and study the car-turning
video at this point of the driving session.

#SESSION - 1
CAR TURNING DEMONSTRATION
You have just driven into a cul-de-sac and wish to
turn the car around. You have seen that there are no
side roads and that the road is wide enough to turn
the car around in.
You have stopped the car beside the road, with the
gears in neutral and the handbrake applied. Now you
will look, assess and decide if the road is clear of
obstructions and ready for the turning manoeuvre.
This demonstration will step you through the moves.
Click the Ok button to continue the demonstration
#SESSION - 2
THE CAR TURNING EXERCISE
Now it is your turn to do the same manoeuvre. You
should remember to always drive slowly, to turn the
wheel briskly, and maintain all round observations.
You should be able to demonstrate that you:
- have full and safe control of the car at all times
- do not allow the car wheels to touch the pavements
- drive slowly and turn the steering wheel briskly
- make all-round observations throughout the turn
- wait for vehicles or pedestrians to move away
There will be a fact sheet before each of 3 moves
Click the Ok button to start this turning manoeuvre
#SESSION - 2 COMPLETE
CAR TURNING DEMONSTRATION PART - 3
The handbrake is put on, first gear is selected and all
round observations made for a clear road. Then the
handbrake is released, clutch raised, and as the car
moves, the steering wheel is turned to the right
bringing the car in line with the road.
As the car lines up with the road the steering wheel
is returned to the central position. As the car moves
away from the turning point in the road, the mirrors
are checked.
Click the Ok button to view the demonstration
#SESSION - 2
Now it is your turn to do the same manoeuvre. You
should remember to always drive slowly, to turn the
wheel briskly, and maintain all round observations.
An examiner will be looking to see that you:
- have full and safe control of the car at all times
- do not allow the car wheels to touch the pavements
- drive slowly and turn the steering wheel briskly
- make all-round observations throughout the turn
- take into consideration any passing vehicles
- wait for vehicles or pedestrians to move away
Click the Ok button to start this demonstration
#SESSION - 2 COMPLETE
Well Done! You have completed the first car turning
sessions involving three turning manoeuvres.
First you were able to study the detailed video. Then
you watched a demonstration and learnt about th
