  3.                              GET A GOOD MODEM

  6.             By good, these days, I am talking about a  14.4K  bps
  7.             fax/modem.   When  I  started out I had a rip-roaring
  8.             1200 bps and I thought that was great ...  because  I
  9.             didn't  know  any  better.  It was my first one in my
  10.             first computer and I didn't have anything to  compare
  11.             it to...so it looked good to me.  Then when I visited
  12.             my  "mentor's" house and saw his "zooming" 2400 baud,
  13.             I knew that I was living in the  dark  ages.   So  it
  14.             wasn't  long  before  I  got  one of those.  I swore,
  15.             then, though, that that was as fast as a modem  ought
  16.             to  go,  and  that  I  would  NEVER  get one of those
  17.             new-fangled 9600 bps-ers!  Just no need for it,  said
  18.             I  to  myself!   Then along came the 14.4K's....and I
  19.             said to myself, "Self, this is  just  too  much,  who
  20.             needs all that speed?" "It's a waste of money"!

  22.             Well,  a  couple  of  years  later, here I am happily
  23.             zinging away with my 14.4K wondering how I  EVER  got
  24.             along  without  it!  It certainly makes long download
  25.             fly right by ... especially  at  long  distance.   It
  26.             also makes it just all around more enjoyable to be on
  27.             a  board  run  with a 14.4K.  It is almost as fast as
  28.             running my own board locally!  That'll be a 19200,  I
  29.             suppose, and let me say right now that I WILL get one
  30.             of  those  as  soon as the price is right!  I can see
  31.             now that the object is to get "local" quality out  to
  32.             the  user!   A  lot  less nerve wracking for everyone
  33.             involved.  Waiting for those screens to scroll and be
  34.             a real pain sometimes.

  36.             Of course, those individuals who are still  puttering
  37.             away  at  300  baud  ...   we'll.....   it gets me so
  38.             frustrated that  I  don't  allow  them  on  my  board
  39.             anymore!    There   oughta   be  a  law  about  those
  40.             MODEL-T's!  Heheheh!  But, of course, a lot of  times
  41.             300 is all a person can afford!  I understand that ..
  42.             but  for goodness sakes saves those pennies real fast
  43.             and by yourself a REAL modem, if only at 1200 bps.

  45.             Installing a modem after you have bought one  is  one
  46.             of  those breath-holding types of deals....Especially
  47.             with the newer models, they are built to  take  right
  48.             out  of  the  box and have up and running in about 10
  49.             minutes!  The breath holding part  comes  at  the  10
  50.             minute mark when either they told the truth or get me
  51.             another  coke  it is going take longer than expected.
  52.             To save yourself a lot  of  hassle  just  remember  a
  53.             couple of points: modems have jumpers that have to be
  54.             set:  COM  PORT  1-4  and  IRQ 2,3,5,7 or whatever is
  55.             free.  Most systems will accept COM 2 IRQ  3  as  the
  56.             winning  ticket!   But  sometimes there are conflicts
  57.             with other loaded hardware so you have  experiment  a
  58.             little  to  find  the  right combination! And that is
  59.             what is takes most of  the  time:  plain  and  simple
  60.             experimentation: trial and error.

  62.             There  is  usually  a  preset configuration .mdm file
  63.             somewhere in the configuration set up.   Just  select
  64.             the name of the modem you have, or one closest to its
  65.             description,  and  it  will automatically load all of
  66.             the configuration options and strings.  I have a U.S.
  67.             Robotics Sportster.  When I  configured  it  with  my
  68.             QModem  Pro  Comm  program  the  file was right there
  69.             waiting for me to configure.  It  was  easy!   Really
  70.             was.

  72.             There  are  also  DIP  switches  either internally or
  73.             externally on the modem.  Follow  the  guide  in  the
  74.             user's  manual  to  tell you how to set these default
  75.             switches.

  77.             Make sure also, that the phone line coming  from  the
  78.             wall  is plugged into the jack in the modem that says
  79.             phone.  The other jack is for a line  coming  out  of
  80.             the  modem  and  into your phone so you can still use
  81.             the phone (when the board is not on, obviously). Make
  82.             sure the phone has an off/on switch for this line, as
  83.             you don't want it ringing all the time  when  someone
  84.             calls the board.

  86.             There is also a command switch in the bbs program for
  87.             turning  off  the computer speaker while the board is
  88.             running....as you don't need to listen to all of  the
  89.             screeching  and  whistling  that comes with each user
  90.             connection to the board.  Just type in M0 at the  end
  91.             of the INIT string and it will shut it off for you!

  93.             If  you  get all this set up and the board still does
  94.             not work properly, check and MAKE SURE all of the COM
  95.             PORTS and IRQs are different!  I had a  problem  with
  96.             mine  because  I  did  not  take the time to read the
  97.             label on the modem which said "Phone"  line!   I  put
  98.             the phone line in the second jack and wondered why it
  99.             didn't  work at all!  also - I had a problem of users
  100.             not being able to upload anything to me, and  me  not
  101.             being  able  to  download  from other boards....After
  102.             days of pulling my hair out trying to figure that one
  103.             out I literally took out a second modem  that  I  had
  104.             left  connected when I got the new one.  That did the
  105.             trick.  Even though it was not  configured  it  still
  106.             was  causing  some kind of interrupt problem.  When I
  107.             removed the modem, it worked fine.

  109.             There is also another little  quirk  I  found  in  my
  110.             system....if   I   run   the  board  through  Windows
  111.             everything works fine.  If I take the  board  out  of
  112.             Windows  but  do  not  reboot...no  one  is  able  to
  113.             download anything.  In fact I even have to  shut  the
  114.             computer OFF for a minute, then turn it back on.... I
  115.             have  tried  every  other sane method of compensating
  116.             for this personality quirk ... but that  is  the  way
  117.             the  system  wants  it!  No doubt your system has its
  118.             own little idiosyncracies as well!
