SOUTH DAKOTA
LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
The State of South Dakota currently uses the driver's Social
Security Number as the license number.
DOCUMENT:
The plastic laminated photographic license displays the driver's
photograph in the lower right corner, and is manufactured by NBS,
Imaging Systems Division. Prior licenses formats were polyester
cards with embossed data, manufactured by Harold's, Inc. A current
issue license displays a large plain rectangular hologram, or a
hologram of Mt. Rushmore over the top left quadrant. Previous
issues display embossed data.
TERM:
License is valid for four (4) years, expiring on the driver's
birthday, with a 30 day grace period granted for renewal. Minors'
licenses expire 30 days after driver's 21st birthday.
MINORS:
Minor licenses issued subsequent to November 1991 show "00/00/00
(actual date) 21st BIRTHDAY" below the heading, with "UNDER 21"
above the photo and phantom numbers of year of 21st birthday below
data boxes. Some formats use a red header bar for under 21 and a
green header for under 16. Previous issues identified a minor with
an embossed star in the lower right corner of photo. A special
restricted license, indicated by "R" in the restriction box, are
issued to drivers age 14 and 15.
CDL:
A Commercial drivers license is designated by "COMMERCIAL DRIVER
LICENSE" on a gold headbar.
