NORTH DAKOTA
LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
The State of North Dakota uses the driver's Social Security Number
as the license number for all commercial drivers licenses (class A,
B, or C) and on most others, as well. At the driver's request
North Dakota will issue (for non-commercial drivers) a sequentially
generated license number that bears no correlation to the driver's
personal identifiers.
DOCUMENT:
The plastic laminated, photographic license manufactured by
Polaroid, displays the driver's photograph along the right side
of the document. Current issue license has the state seal
overlapping the photograph at the top. Previous issues had a state
outline, state seal, and director's signature below the photograph.
All licenses have the camera number next to or overlapping the
photograph. Documents issued between July 1988 and July 1989 have
"NORTH DAKOTA" printed in gold within the laminate.
TERM:
Licenses are valid for four (4) years, expiring on the driver's
birthday. There are sometimes certificates of extension granted to
out-of-state drivers for a period of four (4) years, each.
MINORS:
Licenses issued to drivers under 21 use a to red photograph
background.
CDL:
Commercial licenses are indicated by "COMMERCIAL" printed before
"DRIVERS LICENSE" at the top of the document.
END NORTH DAKOTA
