CALIFORNIA
LICENSE NUMBER FORMAT:
The State of California issues an eight (8) character alpha-numeric
drivers license number consisting of one (1) alpha character
followed by seven (7) numeric characters without spaces or
delimiting characters. License numbers are sequentially issued,
with no correlation between licensee's personal identifiers and the
license number: (Annnnnnn)
DOCUMENT:
The current plastic, credit-card-style license shows a see-through
hologram and a multi-colored DMV logo and California State seal
covering the entire license, including the photograph. The current
license has three track magnetic tape on the reverse side.
Previously issued licenses have 3M retroreflective laminate on the
front. Driver's photograph appears in the lower left corner of the
document, except for minors (see below).
TERM:
License is valid for four (4) years, expiring on the driver's birth
date. The license may be extended for two four (4) year terms with
a certificate of renewal.
MINORS:
Current issue license has the minor licensee's photograph in the
lower RIGHT corner. Drivers under 18 receive licenses reading
"PROVISIONAL UNTIL AGE 18" and drivers under 21 are indicated by a
statement above the signature reading "AGE 21 IN (year)" or "UNDER
21 UNTIL (year)" in red or black.
CDL:
Commercial drivers license shows "COMMERCIAL DRIVER LICENSE" below
the state name in brown.
