01/20 FOND du LAC, Wis. (UPI) -- Two police officers fired for
mishandling an encounter with serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and a
teenager have been hired to work as investigators in the defense of
two Capuchin friars charged with sexual abuse.
John Balcerzak and Joseph Gabrish have been hired by Gerald
Boyle, the attorney for Thomas Gardipee and John Raniszewski. Two
brothers from St. Lawrence Seminary prep school are charged with
sexual offenses alleged by former students of the Catholic boarding
school in Mount Calvary.
Boyle said he hired Gabrish, Balcerzak and other investigators to
talk to former students.
"I hired them after I realized I needed a cadre of
investigators," he said.
Gabrish and Balcerzak were fired by Milwaukee Police Chief Philip
Arreola after they found Dahmer with 14-year-old Konerak
Sinthasomphone. Arreola said the officers failed to properly
investigate and left the boy with Dahmer, who later killed him.
The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission upheld the firings.
Balcerzak and Gabrish have appealed the commission's decision to
Milwaukee County Circuit Court.
