MIAMI (UPI) -- The mother of a 15-year-old girl who was one of
three people stabbed to death in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew
lashed out verbally at the National Guardsman charged in the
slayings.
"I'd kill you personally, you pig! Do you know what you have done
to my family and friends?" Judy Diaz screamed at the defendant,
Steve Coleman, at a court hearing Tuesday.
Coleman is charged with killing Diaz's daughter Regina Rodriguez;
Ronny Quisbert, 20; and Andrew McGinnis Sept. 29 after a night of
bar- hopping.
Coleman, 24, of Tampa was a member of the National Guard
contingent helping with hurricane relief at the time of the
slayings. He said he acted in self defense.
He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one
count of sexual battery on Rodriguez. During the court appearance
Tuesday, prosecutors charged Coleman with another felony, attempted
sexual battery on McGinnis.
"May God have mercy on your soul," Diaz told Coleman as she
stormed out of the courtroom.
The victims were stabbed inside a car parked at Florida
International University. The sexual assaults took place after the
stabbings.
Coleman told police the three tried to rob him after giving him a
ride.
