COMPTON, Calif. (UPI) -- A sheriff's deputy shot and killed an
armed man Wednesday during a drug raid in a Compton neighborhood.
San Gabriel police with the assistance of sheriff's officers
served a search warrant at 6:30 a.m. at the suspect's home in the
unincorporated east Compton area.
Deputy Britta Tubbs said police told deputies that the suspect,
Amado Escobedo, 40, was heavily armed and was believed to be inside.
Deputies went to the rear of the home and tried to talk with
Escobedo, who refused to open the door.
Deputies forced open the back door and found Escobedo pointing a
Soviet-made SKS assault rifle directly at them.
Tubbs said one deputy fired several rounds from a submachine gun,
hitting Escobedo in the upper torso. The suspect died at the scene.
Several members of Escobedo's family were in the home, but no one
else was injured in the shooting.
San Gabriel police did not release details of the drug
investigation that led to the raid.
