IGNORANCE IS THE PRODUCTIVE FIELD OF ALL THOSE THAT FOLLOW, WHETHER THEY ARE
DORMANT, ATTENUATED, OVER POWERED, OR EXPANDED
IGNORANCE IS TO TAKE WHAT IS NON ETERNAL, IMPURE, PAINFUL, AND NOT SELF, FOR
WHAT IS ETERNAL, PURE, HAPPY AND THE SELF
EGOITY IS THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE SEER WITH THE INSTRUMENT OF SEEING
ATTACHMENT IS THAT WHICH DWELLS ON PLEASURE
AVERSION IS THAT WHICH DWELLS ON PAIN
ABIDING IN ITS OWN NATURE AND ESTABLISHED EVEN IN THE LEARNED IS THE CLINGING
TO LIFE
THE FINE IMPRESSIONS ARE TO BE CONQUERED BY RESOLVING THEM INTO THEIR CAUSAL
STATE
BY MEDITATION THEIR MODIFICATIONS ARE TO BE REJECTED
THE "RECEPTACLE OF WORKS" HAS ITS ROOTS IN THE AFORESAID PAIN BEARING
OBSTRUCTIONS, AND THE EXPERIENCE OF THE LATTER IS IN THIS VISIBLE LIFE OR IN THE
UNSEEN LIFE
THE ROOTS BEING THERE, THE FRUITION COMES IN THE FORM OF SPECIES, LONGEVITY, AND
EXPERIENCE OF PLEASURE AND PAIN
ACTIONS BEAR FRUIT AS PLEASURE OR PAIN. CAUSED BY VIRTUE OR VICE
TO THE DISCRIMINATING, ALL IS, AS IT WERE, PAINFUL BECAUSE EVERYTHING BRINGS
PAIN, EITHER AS CONSEQUENCE OR AS ANTICIPATION OF LOSS OF HAPPINESS OR AS FRESH
CRAVING ARISING FROM IMPRESSIONS OF HAPPINESS, AND ALSO BECAUSE THE GUNAS
COUNTERACT ON ANOTHER
THE MISERY WHICH HAS NOT YET COME IS TO BE AVOIDED
THE CAUSE OF THAT MISERY WHICH IS TO BE AVOIDED IS THE JUNCTION OF THE SEER AND
THE SEEN
THE SEER IS THE SELF AND THE SEEN IS THE WHOLE NATURE,
FROM THE MIND DOWN TO THE GROSS MATTER
THE SEEN, WHICH IS COMPOSED OF ELEMENTS AND ORGANS, AND CHARACTERIZED BY
ILLUMINATION, ACTION, AND INERTIA, IS FOR THE PURPOSE OF EXPERIENCE AND RELEASE
OF THE SEER
THE STATES OF THE GUNAS ARE THE GROSS ELEMENTS, THE SUBTLE ELEMENTS, THE COSMIC
INTELLIGENCE AND THE SIGNLESS
THE SEER IS INTELLIGENCE ONLY, AND THOUGH PURE, SEES THROUGH THE COLORING OF THE
INTELLECT
THE TRANSFORMATION THAT TAKES PLACE IN THE NATURE OF THE SEEN IS FOR THE SELF
THOUGH DESTROYED FOR HIM WHOSE GOAL HAS BEEN GAINED, YET NATURE IS NOT DESTROYED
FOR OTHERS, BEING COMMON TO THEM
THE ACTIVITY OF NATURE IS TO MAKE THE SOUL KNOW
THAT IT IS SEPERATE FROM NATURE
JUNCTION OF NATURE AND THE SELF IS THE CAUSE OF THE REALIZATION OF THE NATURE OF
THE POWERS OF BOTH THE SEEN AND ITS LORD
IGNORANCE IS ITS CAUSE
THERE BEING ABSENCE OF THAT IGNORANCE, THERE IS ABSENCE OF JUNCTION. THIS IS THE
DESTRUCTION OF IGNORANCE, AND THIS IS THE INDEPENDENCE OF THE SEER
THE MEANS OF DESTRUCTION OF IGNORANCE IS UNBROKEN PRACTICE OF DISCRIMINATION
HIS KNOWLEDGE IS ATTAINED IN SEVEN SUPREME STEPS
WHEN THIS KNOWLEDGE COMES, IT COMES IN SEVEN STEPS; ONE AFTER ANOTHER AS WE
ATTAIN ONE OF THESE WE KNOW THAT WE ARE GETTING KNOWLEDGE.
THE FIRST STEP WILL MAKE US FEEL THAT WE HAVE KNOWN WHAT IS TO BE KNOWN.
THE SECOND STEP WILL BE THE ABSENCE OF ALL PAIN, IT WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR
ANYTHING TO GIVE US PAIN.
THE THIRD STEP WILL BE THE ATTAINMENT OF FULL KNOWLEDGE, OMNISCIENCE.
THE FOURTH STEP WILL BE THE ATTAINMENT, THROUGH DISCRIMINATION, OF THE END OF
ALL OUR DUTIES.
THE FIFTH STEP WILL BE FREEDOM OF THE CHITTA, REALIZATION THAT ALL TROUBLES
OF THE MIND HAVE FALLEN AWAY.
THE SIXTH STEP WILL BE THE REALIZATION OF THE CHITTA TO MELT AWAY INTO ITS
CAUSES WHENEVER WE DESIRE.
THE SEVENTH STEP WE WILL FIND OURSELFS ESTABLISHED IN OUR TRUE SELF, THE SELF
EXISTING ALONE THROUGHOUT THE UNIVERSE
THROUGH THE PRACTICE OF THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF YOGA THE IMPURITIES ARE DESTROYED
AND KNOWLEDGE IS KINDLED, LEADING UP TO DISCRIMINATION
YAMA, NIYAMA, ASANA, PRANAYAMA, PRATYAHARA, DHARANA, DHYANA AND SAMADHI ARE THE
EIGHT LIMBS OF YOGA
YAMA : SELF RESTRAINT
NIYAMA : RESTRAINT OF THE MIND
ASANA : YOGA POSTURE OF BODY TO CONTROL AND HARNESS PSYCHO PHYSICAL
ENERGIES OF THE BODY AND MIND
PRANAYAMA : BREATHING PRACTICES THAT ARE AIDS TO LIBERATION
PRATYAHARA: RESTRAINING OF THE ORGANS
DHARANA : FIXING THE MIND ON A POINT
DHYANA : CONCENTRATION
SAMADHI : STATE OF COMPLETE MEDITATION ABSORPTION, PEACEFUL BLISS
NON KILLING, TRUTHFULNESS, NON STEALING, CONTINENCE, AND NON RECEIVING ARE
CALLED "YAMA"
THESE, UNBROKEN BY TIME, PLACE, PURPOSE OR CASTE-RULES ARE UNIVERSAL GREAT VOWS
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL PURIFICATION, CONTENTMENT, MORTIFICATION, STUDY AND
WORSHIP OF GOD ARE THE "NIYAMAS"
WHEN THOUGHT TO YOGA ARISE, CONTRARY THOUGHTS SHOULD BE EMPLOYED
THE OBSTRUCTIONS TO YOGA ARE KILLING, FALSEHOOD, AND SO FORTH - WHETHER
COMMITTED, CAUSED, OR APPROVED - EITHER THROUGH AVARICE, ANGER, OR IGNORANCE -
WHETHER SLIGHT, MIDDLING, OR GREAT: THEY RESULT IN INFINITE IGNORANCE AND
MISERY, THIS IS THE METHOD OF THINKING THE CONTRARY
WHEN THE PRACTITIONER IS ESTABLISHED IN NON KILLING, ALL ENMITIES CEASE IN HIS
PRESENCE
BY BEING ESTABLISHED IN TRUTHFULNESS, THE PRACTITIONER GETS THE POWER OF
ATTAINING FOR HIMSELF AND OTHERS THE FRUITS OF WORK WITHOUT THE WORK
BY BEING ESTABLISHED IN NON STEALING, THE PRACTITIONER OBTAINS ALL WEALTH
BY BEING ESTABLISHED IN CONTINENCE, THE PRACTITIONER GAINS ENERGY
WHEN THE PRACTITIONER IS ESTABLISHED IN NON RECEIVING HE GETS THE MEMORY OF
PAST LIFE
WHEN HE IS ESTABLISHED IN INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CLEANLINESS, THERE ARISES IN HIM
DISGUST FOR HIS OWN BODY AND DESIRE FOR NON INTERCOURSE WITH OTHERS\
THERE ALSO ARISE PURIFICATION OF THE SATTVA, CHEERFULNESS OF THE MIND,
CONCENTRATION, CONQUEST OF THE ORGANS, AND FITNESS FOR THE REALIZATION OF THE
SELF
FROM CONTENTMENT COMES SUPERLATIVE HAPPINESS
THE MORTIFICATION OF THE ORGANS AND THE BODY, THROUGH THE DESTRUCTION OF THEIR
IMPURITIES, BRINGS POWER TO THEM
BY THE REPETITION OF THE MANTRA COMES THE REALIZATION OF THE HIGHEST DEITY
THROUGH THE SACRIFICING OF ALL TO GOD COMES SAMADHI
POSTURE IS THAT WHICH IS FIRM AND PLEASANT
THROUGH THE LESSENING OF THE NATURAL TENDENCY AND THROUGH MEDITATION ON THE
INFINITE POSTURE BECOMES FIRM AND PLEASANT
POSTURE BEING CONQUERED, THE DUALITIES DO NOT OBSTRUCT
CONTROL OF THE MOTION OF EXHALATION AND INHALATION FOLLOWS AFTER THIS
ITS MODIFICATIONS ARE THREEFOLD, NAMELY, EXTERNAL, INTERNAL AND MOTIONLESS:
THEY ARE REGULATED BY PLACE, TIME, AND NUMBER: AND FURTHER, THEY ARE EITHER
LONG OR SHORT
THE FOURTH IS THE RESTRAINING OF THE PRANA BY DIRECTING IT EITHER TO EXTERNAL
OR TO INTERNAL OBJECTS
PRANA: ONE OF THE FIVE LIFE FORCES, THE PRANA IS THE UPWARD MOVING BREATH
WHICH CAUSE THE SPIRIT TO EVOLVE. THE PRANA IS FOUND IN THE REGION
OF THE HEART
APANA: ONE OF THE FIVE LIFE FORCES, THE APANA IS DOWNWARD MOVING ONE OF THE
TWO MAIN VITAL AIRS OF THE BODY. IT IS FOCUSED IN THE LOWER DIGESTIVE
REGION AND EXTENDS TO THE ANUS. ASSOCIATED WITH THE COLOR ORANGE RED,
IT GOVERNS THE ELIMINATIVE FUNCTION
SAMANA: ONE OF THE FIVE LIFE FORCES, SAMANA IS FOCUSED IN THE NAVAL REGION AND
AIDS DIGESTION AND METABOLISM. ASSOCIATED WITH A SOLAR RED COLOR, WITH
THE FACULTY OF SIGHT AND WITH THE ASSIMILATIVE FUNCTION
UDANA: ONE OF THE FIVE LIFE FORCES, THE UDANA IS FOCUSED IN THE REGION OF THE
THROAT AND CONTROLS METABOLISM, AGING AND COMMUNICATION. ASSOCIATED
WITH A RED VIOLET COLOR. THE FACULTY OF TOUCH, THE PROCESS OF
SWALLOWING AND SALIVATION
VYANA: ONE OF THE FIVE LIFE FORCES, THE VYANA PERVADES THE WHOLE BODY.
CIRCULATING ENERGIES DERIVED FROM FOOD, BREATH AND THE MIND CONTROLS
BOTH THE EXPANSIVE AND CONTRACTIVE ASPECTS OF THE BEING ASSOCIATED WITH
A LIGHT BLUE COLOR, WITH THE FACULTY OF HEARING AND WITH BODY POSTURE
