CHITTA: THE MIND STUFF, THAT PART OF THE INNER ORGAN WHICH IS THE STORE HOUSE
OF MEMORY, OR WHICH SEEK OF PLEASURABLE OBJECTS)
VRITTIS: STATE OR FORM THE WAVES OF THOUGHT IN THE CHITTA ARE CALLED THE
VRITTIS
AT THAT TIME (THE TIME OF CONCENTRATION) THE SEER (SELF) REST IN HIS OWN
(UNMODIFIED) STATE
AT OTHER TIMES (WHEN NOT CONCENTRATING) THE SEER IS IDENTIFIED WITH THE
MODIFICATIONS (MODIFICATION ARE VRITTIS)
THERE ARE FIVE CLASSES OF MODIFICATIONS, SOME PAINFUL AND OTHERS NOT PAINFUL
THESE ARE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE, INDISCRIMINATION, VERBAL DELUSION, SLEEP AND MEMORY
DIRECT PERCEPTION, INFERENCE AND COMPETENT EVIDENCE CONSTITUTE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE
OR PROOF
INDISCRIMINATION IS FALSE KNOWLEDGE NOT BASED ON THE REAL NATURE OF AN OBJECT
VERBAL DELUSION FOLLOWS FROM WORDS HAVING NO REALITY
SLEEP IS A MODIFICATION WHICH EMBRACES THE FEELING OF VOIDNESS
MEMORY ARISES WHEN THE MODIFICATION OF PERCEIVED OBJECTS DO NOT SLIP AWAY AND
THROUGH IMPRESSIONS COME BACK TO CONSCIOUSNESS
THESE MODIFICATIONS ARE CONTROLLED BY PRACTICE AND NON ATTACHMENT
CONTINUOUS STRUGGLE TO KEEP THEM PERFECTLY RESTRAINED IS PRACTICE
IT BECOMES FIRMLY GROUNDED BY LONG AND CONSTANT EFFORTS WITH GREAT LOVE (FOR
THE END TO BE ATTAINED)
THE SUBJUGATION OF THE THIRST FOR OBJECTS SEEN OR HEARD OF IS NON ATTACHMENT
THAT IS EXTREME NON ATTACHMENT WHICH GIVES UP EVEN THE THIRST FOR THE GUNAS,
AND WHICH COMES FROM THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE REAL NATURE OF THE SELF
GUNA: CREATIVE FORCE, PRESERVING FORCE, AND TRANSCENDENTAL FORCE, WHICH WHEN
TOGETHER ARE A CONSTITUENT OF NATURE AND THE MANIFESTATION OF CONSCIOUSNESS
THE SAMADHI ENDOWED WITH RIGHT KNOWLEDGE IS THAT WHICH IS ATTENDED BY REASONING,
DISCRIMINATION, BLISS, AND UNQUALIFIED EGO.
SAMADHI: STATE OF COMPLETE MEDITATION ABSORPTION, PEACEFUL BLISS
THERE IS ANOTHER SAMADHI WHICH IS ATTAINED BY CONSTANT PRACTICE OF THE CESSATION
OF ALL MENTAL ACTIVITY, AND IN WHICH THE CHITTA RETAINS ONLY THE UNMANIFESTED
IMPRESSIONS
THIS SAMADHI, WHEN NOT FOLLOWED BY EXTREME NON ATTACHMENT, BECOMES THE CAUSE OF
THE REMANIFESTATION OF THE HIGHER FORCES AND OF THOSE WHO BECOME MERGED IN
NATURE.
BY OTHERS THIS SAMADHI IS ATTAINED THROUGH FAITH, ENERGY, MEMORY, CONCENTRATION,
AND DISCRIMINATION OF THE REAL FROM THE UNREAL
SUCCESS IS SPEEDY FOR THE EXTREMELY ENERGETIC
THE SUCCESS OF A PRACTITIONER DIFFERS ACCORDING AS THE MEANS THEY ADOPT ARE MILD,
MEDIUM OR INTENSE
OR THIS SAMADHI IS ATTAINED BY DEVOTION TO GOD
GOD (THE SUPREME RULER) IS A SPECIAL SELF, UNTOUCHED BY MISERY, ACTIONS AND
THEIR RESULTS, AND DESIRES
IN HIM BECOMES INFINITE THAT ALL KNOWINGNESS WHICH IN OTHERS IS ONLY A GERM
HE IS THE TEACHER OF EVEN THE ANCIENT TEACHERS, NOT BEING LIMITED BY TIME
THE WORD THAT MANIFESTS HIM IS "OM"
THE REPETITION OF OM AND MEDITATING ON ITS MEANING IS THE WAY
MEANING: INTERNAL IMPRESSION
FROM THAT IS GAINED INTROSPECTION AND THE DESTRUCTION OF OBSTACLES
DISEASE, MENTAL LAZINESS, DOUBT, LACK OF ENTHUSIASM, LETHARGY, CLINGING TO SENSE
ENJOYMENTS, FALSE PERCEPTION, NON ATTAINING OF CONCENTRATION, AND FALLING AWAY
FROM CONCENTRATION WHEN ATTAINED - THESE ARE THE OBSTRUCTING DISTRACTIONS
GRIEF, MENTAL DISTRESS, TREMOR OF THE BODY, AND IRREGULAR BREATHING ACCOMPANY
NON RETENTION OF CONCENTRATION
TO REMEDY THIS ON SHOULD PRACTICE ON ONE OBJECT
THE FEELINGS OF FRIENDSHIP, MERCY, GLADNESS, AND INDIFFERENCE, IN REGARD TO
OBJECTS HAPPY, UNHAPPY, GOOD AND EVIL, RESPECTIVELY, PACIFY THE CHITTA
BY EXPELLING AND RESTRAINING THE BREATH THE CHITTA IS PACIFIED
THOSE FORMS OF CONCENTRATION WHICH BRING EXTRAORDINARY SENSE PERCEPTIONS CAUSE
PERSEVERANCE OF THE MIND
OR THE CHITTA IS PACIFIED BY MEDITATION ON THE EFFULGENT LIGHT, (LOTUS) WHICH
IS BEYOND ALL SORROW
DURING MEDITATION, IMAGINE THE LOTUS IN THE HEART, UPON BREATHING INWARDS
SEE THE LOTUS' PEDALS DOWNWARD, UPON EXPELLING THE BREATH SEE THE LOTUS
PEDALS UPWARD, AND ALWAYS IN THE LOTUS AN EFFULGENT LIGHT
OR BY MEDITATION ON THE HEART THAT HAS GIVEN UP ALL ATTACHMENT TO SENSE OBJECTS
OR BY MEDITATION ON THE KNOWLEDGE THAT COMES IN DREAMS OR THE HAPPINESS
EXPERIENCED IN DEEP SLEEP
OR BY MEDITATION ON ANYTHING THAT APPEALS TO ONE AS GOOD
THE PRACTITIONER MIND, THUS MEDITATION, BECOMES UNOBSTRUCTED FROM THE FINEST
(ATOMIC) TO THE INFINITE
THE PRACTITIONER WHOSE MODIFICATIONS HAVE THUS BECOME POWERLESS OBTAINS, IN THE
RECEIVER, THE INSTRUMENT OF RECEIVING, AND THE RECEIVED(ie: SOUL MIND AND
EXTERNAL OBJECTS), CONCENTRATEDNESS AND SAMENESS, LIKE A CRYSTAL BEFORE
DIFFERENT COLORED OBJECTS
THE SAMADHI IN WHICH VIBRATION, MEANING AND THE RESULTING KNOWLEDGE ARE MIXED
IS CALLED "SAMADHI WITH QUESTION"
SOUND HERE MEANS VIBRATION; MEANING THE NERVE CURRENTS WHICH CONDUCT IT;
KNOWLEDGE MEANS THE REACTION FROM THE VIBRATION FIRST THERE IS THE EXTERNAL
VIBRATION, SOUND; THIS, CARRIED INWARD BY THE NERVE CURRENTS IS THE MEANING;
AFTER WHICH COMES A REACTIONARY WAVE IN THE CHITTA, WHICH IS KNOWLEDGE
THE SAMADHI CALLED "WITHOUT QUESTION" IS ATTAINED WHEN THE MEMORY IS PURIFIED,
OR BECOMES DEVOID OF QUALITIES, EXPRESSING ON THE MEANING OF THE OBJECT
MEDITATED ON
MEDITATING ON THESE THREE, CREATES A STATE WHERE THESE THREE ARE NOT MIXED,
AND WE CAN RID OURSELVES OF THEM
BY THIS PROCESS THE SAMADHIS "WITH DISCRIMINATION" AND "WITHOUT DISCRIMINATION",
WHOSE OBJECTS ARE FINER, ARE ALSO EXPLAINED
SAME PROCESS AS BEFORE EXCEPT BEFORE THEY WERE GROSS WHERE HERE THEY ARE FINE
THE FINER OBJECTS END WITH THE PRADHANA
PRADHANA: STATE OF EQUILIBRIUM OF SATTVA, RAJAS AND TAMAS
SATTVA: BALANCE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS IN NATURE
RAJAS: BALANCE OF ACTIVITY IN NATURE
TAMAS: BALANCE OF DULLNESS OR INERTIA IN NATURE
THESE SAMADHIS ARE "WITH SEED"
WHEN THE PRACTITIONER BECOMES ESTABLISHED IN THE SAMADHI "WITHOUT
DISCRIMINATION" HIS CHITTA BECOMES FIRMLY FIXED
THE KNOWLEDGE ATTAINED THROUGH IT IS CALLED "FILLED WITH TRUTH"
THE KNOWLEDGE THAT IS GAINED FROM TESTIMONY AND INFERENCE IS ABOUT ORDINARY
OBJECTS. THAT FROM THE SAMADHI JUST MENTIONED IS OF A MUCH HIGHER ORDER, BEING
ABLE TO PENETRATE WHERE INFERENCE AND TESTIMONY CANNOT GO
THE RESULTING IMPRESSION FROM THIS SAMADHI OBSTRUCTS ALL OTHER IMPRESSIONS
BY THE RESTRAINT OF EVEN THIS IMPRESSION, WHICH OBSTRUCTS ALL OTHER IMPRESSIONS,
ALL BEING RESTRAINED, COMES THE SEEDLESS SAMADHI
