yes to WWCD, but not WENZ or KNDD, which i would describe as "alternative" or
"new rock" or "top 40/modern." See this week's _Billboard_ magazine.
R&R in the past would have called AAA "eclectic AOR," which are typified

Subject: Confused about city of license
From: slutsky@tesla.njit.edu
Organization: NONE
I am confused about the FCC rules on the city of license of radio stations.
For example WYNY-FM (103.5) is licensed to Lake Success, NY which is a
bedroom community in Nassau County just over the city line. When WYNY
gives its legal ID they say "WYNY Lake Success - New York City"
They actually slur the Lake Success so one can barely make it out.
As far as I know there are no offices or other facilities in Lake
Success. Are they required to maintain a mailing address there?
Several New York City stations are licensed to Newark, NJ. For example,
WHTZ (Z-100) is licensed to Newark, but its facilities are in nearby
Secaucus, NJ. Are they required to "serve" the city of Newark. Should
they have public service programming for Newark?
On the other hand there are stations licensed to suburban cities or
counties that do appeal to a local audience. WFAS and WVOX in Westchester
County are examples.
I am just curious about knowing the exact FCC regulation on this matter
and how should radio stations adhere to it.

The Celtics do not own WVEI. It is owned by Xen Zapis, who also
owns WAAF-FM 107.3 (the stations began life as WAAB AM-WAAF FM).
WEEI leases the WVEI signal for $2 million a year...and I suspect
Westinghouse would not continue the practice. I think there are
other signal improvements we can afford to make.
[For those unfamiliar with the situation, WEEI's 590 kHz signal
is nulled very sharply to the west to protect WTAG-580 in
Worcester MA, 5 kw 45 miles to the west. In 1991, when WEEI
became all-sports, they began leasing AM-1440, then WFTQ, in
Worcester to simulcast their signal. Ratings have been poor
to nonexistent for 1440-WVEI.]
As for WBZA, current FCC rules would make it impossible to
reactivate. Do you have problems getting WBZ in Northampton?
I've gotten a crystal-clear stereo WBZ signal during the
day parked just underneath the old WBZA towers in Springfield,
100 miles west of Boston.

Subject: WPXY AM Rochester becomes WHTK
From: fybush@world.std.com (Scott D Fybush)
Organization: The World Public Access UNIX, Brookline, MA
The subject line says it all. Pyramid's WPXY AM
Rochester, which had been simulcasting Pyramid's WPXY-FM (97.9) and
its CHR format, is now "Hot Talk 1280," WHTK(AM).
WHTK is being operated by the Lincoln Group (WHAM 1180 - WVOR 100.5 -
WEZO 93.3) and will be purchased by the Lincoln Group, pending FCC
approval.
WHTK carries Imus in the morning, Gene Burns in the afternoon,
Don and Mike at night, Liddy in middays, and Unistar news, along
with some local news from WHAM's newsroom. No decision has
been made as to whether WHTK will pick up WPXY-AM's Red Wings
(AAA) baseball contract.
WHTK operates on 1280kHz with 5000 watts, directional day and night, from
a transmitter at South Winton Road by the Barge Canal in
Brighton NY (less than a mile from my family's home).
The station went on the air in 1947 as WVET, owned by the Veterans
Broadcasting Company. In 1961 it and WVET-TV 10 (a shared-time
operation with WHEC-TV 10) bought out WROC-TV 8 and WROC-FM 97.9.
WVET-AM became WROC-AM; WVET-TV signed off. Studios moved at
that time from 17 S. Clinton to the WROC facility at 201 Humboldt.
WROC-AM/WPXY-FM were sold in 1980, moved to 55 St. Paul Street,
and the AM calls changed to WPXN. Format at that time was all-news.
It changed to big bands in 1982, and the calls changed to WPXY-AM
and format to CHR simulcast in 1984. In 1989 the format went
back to big bands, and in 1990 the format changed to "Kool
Gold" and the calls to WKQG. The calls changed back to WPXY-AM
one last time in 1991, when the stations moved to 30 N. Union Street.
Under pyramid, 1280 operated in stereo (it was Rochester's first
stereo station). I won't know until the next time I get back to
Rochester whether they're still in stereo. WHAM is stereo, so
I imagine they'll keep 1280 in stereo as well.
I have a tape of the WPXY-WHTK transition available for trade...
160 minutes unscoped.

The WCFL call was dropped over ten years ago when the changed their
programming format from a top40 station to religious broadcasts. Now
Chicago has another *@&!$& sports station, just what we need. As a result
of the change, WLUP FM-98 is now mostly talk. Save us. Incidently Gene, 60
miles SW of Chicago there is a radio station at 104.7 FM with the call
letters WCFL and the broadcast in the same format as the old WCFL you
remembered back in the '70s.

Hooo dogie! WCFL, "The Voice of Labor" and organ of the Chicago
Federation of Labor for many years, was sold to Christian broadcasters
in 1984. For three years they valiantly competed with Channel 38
for the honour, "Wackiest Broadcasting Outlet in Chicagoland," before
selling in April 1987 to Evergreen Broadcasting, owners of WLUP-FM
("the Loop") and now WBLZ-FM ("the Blaze") and being christened WLUP-AM.
For six years WLUP-AM cleaned up. At one point, with Jonathon
Brandmeier simulcasting to the AM and FM in the mornings, Kevin
Matthews middays, and Steve Dahl-Garry Meier in the afternoons,
AM 1000 had the second most lucrative audience (to WFMT, the
classical station) in the Chicago area. But Brandmeier went to
afternoons, Steve and Garry broke up, and AM management decided
to position the station as a 24-hour sports talker, hence the
new call letters, WMVP-AM.
Readers of r.r.b. wishing to track the latest news of the Loop
family (or soap opera, take your pick) are invited to send mail

They will be added to LoopList, a discussion group where people

Everyone keeps thinking that WCFL went from TOP-40 to religious. That
is not the case. There was a brief stint of 'easy-listening' music
followed by a well programmed, but terminally pretentious format
called 'Lifestyle Radio" which was like a radio-magazine for the
tragically trendy. When it flopped, then came the Jesus People.
As for the Wackiest format, you gotta tune in to WYCA 92.3 in Hammond.
They run the most bizzarre circus of preacers you ever have heard.
I exagerate not, Saturday Night Live and the National Lampoon would
have to go some distance to make 'satire' that is stranger than these
brokers on WYCA. It is unbelievable. I could not describe them and
I have NEVER heard a Christian station, brokered or not, that hosted
such an incredibly bizzarre troupe.
Oh, and "The Blaze is WWBZ.

Well, the LOOP will never be the same. But then again what ever is?
I still think they blew it by futzing around with the winning formula.
The AM-Sports is dry compared to THE SCORE (WSCR-AM 820) who has a
very lively and irreverent feel. Strange, the Score sounds more like
the old WLUP-AM then the current WMVP does.
Lets just hope they decide to uplink the FM format. It only costs
$1500.00 a month for a stereo, hi-fi SCPC channel on a satellite!
That is chumo-change to Evergreen Media.

Hi, all;
Just responding to Dan Krull's question regarding Sound Money. The program
does, indeed, originate here at Minnesota Public Radio (out of D Control,
two doors down from where I write, to be exact) on Saturday mornings at 10
am central time. If you have access to the Public Radio satellite system
on Galaxy IV, it is on Channel 9. Bob Potter is a great host for this type
of program (he is also our Morning Edition host) because it is strongly
rumored that was the inspiration for Jack Benny's frugal miser character.
(That's a joke, Bob...)
For more information on Sound Money, I would recommend writing to us here.
The address is:

I'll get in touch with Karen Tofte, the producer, and see what I can find

Unmentionable. The SF channel, 98.9 has never made money, according to
reliable sources (except once when it was bought for $100,000 via a
minority ownership preference ruling, then sold 3 years later for $3
million). Viacom, the current owner, has not done well with it, which
