Having recently returned from vacation, I notice the call letter
"meanings" postings continue (unabated?) and a variety of
sources added, including a back edition of Bob Nelson's list from
Compuserve.
The reason for this note is to make the point that a large number
of calls were assigned in the early days in a sequential manner, and
while slogans were adopted to match the calls, they were *not*
always official. Sometimes, in researching the older stations, I
have found that the "urban folklore" slogan may have differed from
that the station used. In some cases, a name given by a competing station
may have become attached.
So, when reviewing lists of calls, just be careful in stating "the calls
meant *this*:" ... sometimes they didn't. They sound like they could
have. But some owners were just not that connected.

From: WEOS-FM <@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU:BLACK%HWS1@HWS.bitnet>
Organization: NONE
In a previous post, a reference was made to the DACS as being available on
a "202" phone number and 2400 Baud Modem. This is for registered users, ONLY!
This is in the category of Producer, stations, and other Public Radio people
who need access to this data service. The DACSREAD service that was listed,
provides a service for producers and a backup for stations that get the data
via satellite. The messages are not meant for the general public and the
system is password and user protected.
There has been some discussion of having access to this information on the
Internet, but no discussion on free public access, as most of the material
on the DACS is not really for the general public. If a system was developed,
it would probably be limited to press release and other information on
programs, rather than feed schedules. The Public Radio Satellite System does
require stations that take any of the programming to be registered. It would
be contrary to the by laws of the system to make all the feed information
public, as I think it would encourage access, at the expense of the stations
that pay the access fees (note NPR & APR are in addition to basic access fees).
In addition, the average person (home user) does not have the ability to pick
up the current SCPC feeds thatthe system uses, let alone the soon to be
implemented SCPC digital.

As a programmer who has "send" access to the DACS system, let me
join you in hoping they get Internet access. The system is not
only archaic, it is a royal pain to use. Any suggestions on how
to gently nudge them in the right direction?

I live in Waterloo and am a former resident of Cedar Rapids, which is 50 miles
away. I think that station was actually KWWL, and it is now known as KWLO.
The TV station here in Waterloo is still KWWL.

Does anybody in the Washington, D.C. area or anywhere know if Infinity
Broadcasting bought WPGC-FM, and WPGC-AM. If you do know, will they change
the format of WPGC-FM? I think I read in Broadcasting and Cable magazine
that they did. Donnie Simpson who is a morning talk show host on WPGC-FM is
suppose to go national, but this may change if WPGC-FM was bought....
Thanks..

* On November 1st, Atlantic Radio Ventures of Manchester,Mass formalized
its merger with Stoner Broadcasting of Annapolis,MD and MultiMarket
Communications of Hartford to form American Radio Systems. Atlantic's
3 Boston stations(WRKO-AM,WHDH-AM and WBMX-FM) join stations in Hartford,
Rochester,Buffalo, Dayton, Louisville, Des Moines to make ARS a top-20
broadcasting company. ARS consists of 20 AM-FM stations.
ARS is actively shopping for a second FM signal in the Boston market.
* According to published reports, another potential FM shopper appears
to be Group W(owner of WBZ-AM and 'maybe' soon-to-be-owner of WEEI-AM) which
seems to be looking to establish a strong FM-AM-TV presence.
If someone out there owns an FM station in the nation's 9th largest
market, this is might be your time to cash in...:-)
* WHDH-850AM(NewsTalk 850) now rebroadcasts 3-hour Rush Limbaugh Show
at 12midnight....
* Soft AC station WSSH-99.5FM(WISH 99.5) has added a nightly jazz show
from 10pm-2a...It's called 'Boston's Nighttime Wish'. Boston hasn't
had any kind of weeknight jazz show on a comercial station since Greater
Media pulled a plug on a smooth jazz outlet WCDJ-96.9FM(now country WBCS)
in early May of this year...Non-commercial WGBH-FM, WHRB-FM and WBUR-FM
have daily jazz shows...Alternative rock station WFNX-FM and an AC
outlet WMJX both have Sunday morning/afternoon jazz shows...

WVEI(formely WFTQ) in Worcester is owned by Zapis Communications(the
same company which co-owns the head-banging rock outlet WAAF 107.3FM).
'VEI in Worcester has a 1-year deal to simulcast 'EEI. I believe it
expires in the spring.
I don't think we should we worry about the Celtics ever getting back
into the broadcasting business.(Reportedly, the team will be sold after
money-bleeding 'EEI and a money-making Fox-affiliated UHF station,
WFXT-TV25 are both unloaded).
A report in this Tuesday's Boston Globe had indicated that Westinghouse
has locked a sale price before the next(fall) ratings come out that might
show another big surge by Imus and increse the station's(WEEI) value.
The sale price is somewhere between $2 to $2.5 million. The letter-of-
intent should be signed sometime this or next week. Westinghouse will
take over WEEI operations as soon as that is done, prior to any kind
formal approval by the FCC.
Speaking of Westinghouse/WBZ expansion in the Boston market, reportedly,
WBZ's parent company will move WEEI from its studios in Charlestown into
a newly-constructed additional studio space(to house 2 more radio stations
in addition to WBZ-AM) at its historic Brighton location. Westingouse
has also been shopping around for an FM staion in the Boston market. In
January of 1982, Westinghouse sold WBZ-106.7FM to Greater Media which is
now highly rated AC outlet WMJX.
WEEI's current GM Aaron Daniels(of WABC-AM fame) will not be asked by
Group W management to come aboard when his contract expires at the end
of this month.
