a year or so ago, our local CBS station (KIRO) advertized that they would
be re-broadcasting these again, but it was short-lived -- there was a legal
hangup (whoever owns the rights wanted too much money for them, something
like that.) Too bad, really. I remember listening to them after bedtime
and enjoying scaring the hell out of my little brother on the bunkbed below
mine. KIROs Jim French filled in with some sort of mystery radio theater,
but it doesn't IMHO come close.
Oh, I have occasionally heard these on Canadian stations when insomnia has
given way to AM BCB DXing, but I've yet to get any call letters for this.

Subject: Radio Mystery Theater Update
From: PACHECO@acs.harding.edu (Captain Ron)
Organization: Harding University
For those interested, here is a followup to my posting last week
regarding the CBS Radio Mystery Theater:
I contacted KNX in Los Angeles, the station which aired the program
during the time I lived there. I discovered that the program was not
actually produced by CBS but by a man named Hy Brown. KNX provided me
with the phone number of Hy Brown in New York.
I contacted Hy Brown, a very enjoyable person to talk to, and discovered
the following. First, he produced (and still produces) and owns all of
the episodes of the Radio Mystery Theater. The episodes ARE NOT
available on cassette, and any episodes which may be floating around out
there on tape are illegal copies. Mr. Brown has apparently been
approached on several occasions to publish his works on tape, but he
feels that this opens the door for excessive pirating and copying and
has no plans to do so.
Mr. Brown tried at one point, unsucessfully, to get these shows back on
the air (not just the old ones but new productions), but could not find
enough stations to carry the episodes to make it worth his while. He
would like to get these shows back on the air at a national level, as he
feels very strongly (believe me, I talked to him!) about radio as a
theater medium, and he emphasizes that he has modern, 90's-style mystery
shows just waiting to go, but he wants a sponsor (wasn't it True-Value
hardware stores that used to sponsor the show) and the involvement of
one or two hundred stations. He said he was very easy to work with and
that this could easily expand into very low cost, national radio
advertising. Anyone out there reading this own a large corporation? :)
He regretted that he would not be able to make the shows available to me
on tape, but did recommend that I call my local radio station and tell
anyone else interested to do the same.
One last thing which didn't hit me until I got off the phone with him,
but if he is still producing shows and is employing writers as he said
he is, to whom is he selling this material? Is he just sitting on it
while trying to get it back on the air at a national level? He
mentioned that he had over 1500 shows, which includes something like 400
original Radio Mystery Theater episodes.
For anyone interested, Mr. Brown can be contacted at:
285 Central Park West
New York, NY 10025
212-724-4333
BTW, there is obvious interest across the nation in this series of
shows, as evidenced by the volume of e-mail I have received since my
posting last week, and by Mr. Brown's own indication that he receives
one or two phone calls a week just like mine. I can certainly
understand, as this was one of the best radio theater shows that I can
ever remember existing. This was good stuff! Let's hope there is
enough interest to rekindle it in the not too distant future.

Some news at New York's sportsradio WFAN:
Daily News sports columnist Mike Lupica heard on WFAN from 10 AM to
1 PM on weekdays has resigned. Lupica reportedly had several clashes
with station stars Don Imus and Mike Francesa over guests and the
pecking order at the station. One WFAN source sid that he just never
really fit in. He will be replaced by WWOR-TV's Russ Salzberg who
initially sought the job early in the year.
Don Imus has endorsed David Dinkins for re-election "out of friendship."
This endorsement was muted by Imus's statement that Dinkins could do
a better job and will probably lose the election anyway. Imus also
called Dinkin's challenger Rudy Guiliani and "equally good and decent
man." Imus' support was coveted by both major candidates.
By the time you read this the electio results will be known. Last
night (Monday) I had to turn on a noncommercial station because I
was tired off all the negative campaigning. May the best man win.
IMHO I wish there was a lever that stated none of the above.
THEY BOTH STINK!!

Subject: The official Alt.fan.greaseman FAQ

Organization: George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, USA
Alt.fan.greaseman FAQ
The Greaseman is a radio personality on the Infinity Broadcasting
network. He broadcasts from Los Angeles to New York City, Washington,
Atlanta, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and San Jose. He is known for his bits
and song parodies. He also has his own vocabulary which he uses to avoid
trouble with the FCC. Before, he broadcast out of DC on DC/101 where he
competed and beat Howard Stern on a consistant basis. The Greaseman is on
by himself most of the time, though sometimes you hear his producer, Bill
Scanlan cackling in the background.
Q: What is the Greaseman's real name?
A: Doug Tracht. He prefers to keep his radio life and his personal life
separate. His radio name is Nino Greasemaneli.
Q: Why does Howard Stern hate the Greaseman so much?
A: Howard worked for DC/101 until he got fired. When the Greaseman was
hired to take Howie's place he not only held on to Howie's audience
but increased it. Then when Howard syndicated in DC he competed
with the Grease until the Grease moved to Infinity where they now
are co-workers for the Broadcasting Giant. Now, mentions of the
Greaseman on the Howard Stern show appears to be just an act in
part of Stern.
Q: Which one was the Grease in the Village People?
A: He was not really in the Village People. But in the bit, he was the
construction worker.
Q: What is this Bingo that the Grease dislikes so much?
A: The Greaseman's college nick name... Ask him about it.
Q: How can I get in touch with him?
A: Call him between 1730 and 2200 EST at 1-800-544-9294 and
1-213-850-0986 (FAX) and BTW do not address him as "dude".

Q: What is the alarm that is sometimes heard in the background when the
Greaseman talks?
A: The Geeze alarm. This goes off when the greaseman starts geezing.
Q: What other gigs did Grease do on the radio?
A: Like any other up-and-coming DJ, Grease worked at other stations in
other markets to develop his unique style. They include:
Washington DC (WRC-AM 980) 1974 - 1976
Jacksonville, Florida (WAPE) 1976 - 1981
Washington DC (WWDC-FM 101.1) 1981-1993
Q: Did he always leave on good terms?
In almost all cases, yes. The one notable exception was WRC, when
management decided his morning personality wasn't quite right, and gave
him a choice between dropping the "Greaseman" character and leaving.
Grease chose the latter. If you ask about it today, he will joke about
the time he was collecting unemployment insurance in DC and would "stay
up to watch the moon rise and CURSE THE NIGHT!" although I'm sure at the
time it was somewhat unsettling.
Although he left Florida voluntarily to take the better offer at DC-101,
he did offend some bible-belt types during his stay. The Florida gig
was important to developing the Grease as a "god-fearing, truck-driving
redneck," though. The Florida station has since gone to religious music
("From Grease to Grace" was their motto for a while). Their loss.
Q: Are there any good biographies or other comprehensive stories about
the Greaseman?
A: Grease is a very private person, and spent a number of years in DC
before finally consenting to an in-depth story about him in the
Washington Post Magazine Fall 1987. It's a good resource to summarize
his past gigs and overall life story. Also the Washingtonian Magazine
did an article on him in the January of 1993 in commemeration of his
departure from DC.
Grease also appeared on the Larry King Show (early to mid-80's) to talk
about morning radio in general. The only down side was that he was
teamed with a "Morning Zoo" DJ as a co-interviewee, a format that has
become annoyingly ubiquitous on the radio landscape. Transcripts may be
available (don't know how to get them, sorry). This is the old
Mutual show that ran all night (Grease probably got up early to do it :-),
and not the current CNN TV talk show.
Q: Are there any albums or compilations of Grease bits?
A: There was a 4-part "Best of Grease" compilation, available on
cassettes. These became unavailable shortly before he left DC-101.
They are now prized collectors items and can only be obtained from
private owners. Part of Grease's popularity on a national basis
before he went into syndication (and hence part of the motivation
for this newsgroup) was the creation and exchange of bootleg
tapes among an extended network of fans. Some of his best work has
never been republished (although you can occasionally talk him into
doing them again on his current show).
Q: Did Grease ever serve in the military?
A: Like John Wayne, Grease has a deep and abiding respect for everyone
who serves in uniform, but never served himself. During the Vietnam
war, he was attending Ithaca College in New York, and his draft number
never came up.
Q: But Grease did serve as a policeman?
A: Yes, he did. While working at his gig in Florida, he worked as
a reserve police officer on the night shift. Morning staffers would
be jolted out of their bleary-eyed state by the sight of Grease doing
his show in full uniform with a 44 Magnum strapped to his belt.
Q: Is Greaseman a bigot/homophobe?
A: Certainly not. Like the program "In Living Color" or even
rec.humor.funny, Grease parodies what's funny in everyone, and winds up
defusing hatred as a result. Grease respects all of his fans, and
wishes well even those who don't like him.
Q: But there was that "Martin Luther King, Jr." incident in DC?
A: Yes, sometimes there's a fine line between parody and cruelty, and
Grease crossed the line only once during his otherwise unmarred broadcasting
career spanning over 2 decades.
Sometime in the late 80's, he was noting the passing of Martin Luther
King Jr.'s birthday (which had then only recently become a national
holiday). Grease said something about "killing 4 more and getting rest
of the week off." Grease was suspended, and apologized for the incident
on an "Editorial Rebuttal" on WRC-TV in DC.
Haven't the rest of you made mistakes or are you all perfect?
Q: What does AMF mean?
A: Adios my friend.
Q: What is the "Bit without an Ending?"
A: When Grease was working in Florida, he would be prevented from
getting a good day's sleep after his morning gig by thoughtless
model-airplane enthusiasts who would buzz their models outside his
window.
Grease came up with a revenge skit with a model plane of his own that
would shoot the others out of the sky. The plane became posessed by
Damien and started chasing after him. Grease then got too deep into
this bit without a way out (and tried to incorporate this into the
bit). After fumbling with the sound-effects, and trying a foray South
of the Border, and then calling in Big-Dick Brannigan, he finally gave
up groping for a punch line. Grease can usually be counted on to do
some of the most impressive ad-libbing and improvisation on the radio
today, but at that time his talents failed him. The bit originally
aired in the Fall of 1982 from WWDC FM Washington, DC/101.
It's considered a classic, and is on Vol. 1 of the "Best of Grease" tapes.
He owns the rights to all his bits, and may rerun it on his current show
from time to time.
Q: What stations carry the Greaseman?
A: City Station Time

Subject: New Monitor Radio Interantional format

RE: MRI Press Release
Here is a press release on MRI which you may find informative:
On Monday, November 1, Monitor Radio International (formerly World Service)
moved to a live, one-hour broadcast each weekday, starting at 14 UTC (9 a.m.
EST).
Monitor Radio International (MRI) is the news and information, shortwave radio
broadcast arm of The Christian Science Monitor, the Pulitzer Prize winning
newspaper published by the Christian Science Church.
A taped version of the live program will rollover for 24 hours, until 2 UTC
Saturday (9 pm Friday EST).
This weekly cycle begins each Monday at 14 UTC, following four, hourly
broadcasts (starting at 10 UTC) of Monitor Radio's Early Edition, modified to
include a daily religious article and frequency announcements, which will run
after the conclusion of the Early Edition.
Monitor Radio, also a radio broadcast arm of The Christian Science Monitor,
produces news and information programs designed for U.S. audiences.
These changes complete the transition, begun Sept. 26, 1993, of MRI from a
two-hour program to its currrent one-hour format, designed to enhance the
program's appeal for international audiences. The previous format consisted of
one-hour of Monitor Radio's domestic shows (the Early and Daily Editions),
followed by an hour of features intended for the shortwave audience.
The content of the new, MRI is assembled entirely with international listeners
in mind. It includes original stories, features and international news roundups
as well as stories filed for Monitor Radio by more than a dozen correspondents
reporting from around the world. The Letterbox feature continues to occupy a
regular and important slot in the show, bringing it to a close. The Monitor's
daily religious article follows the news broadcast.
The show's Boston staff include Steve Leveille (host), Vince Winkel (producer),
Dave Casanave (associate producer and director) and Patrick Timmerman
(associate producer).

From: @vetmed.cvm.uiuc.edu:krull%vm96@cvm (Dan Krull)
Organization: College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois
In the November 93' issue of Money magazine, there was an article
about Minnesota's Public radio's weekly Sound Money show. It is
carried live Saturdays at 10 a.m. central time on 83 public radio
stations and broadcast on tape on 42 others around the country.
Bob Potter is the show's host, and Erica Whittlinger is a regular
on the show. According to the article, Whittlinger has built
quite a reputation on show. Has anybody heard this show? If so,
at what time, station, station frequency, city of broadcast?
If people e-mail me the pertinent info, I will make a list of all
the public radio stations that broadcast this show and post it.
I believe this program could help everyone, so PLEASE e-mail me
if you have any info.
Thanks

Subject: Public Radio's Sound Money

In a recent issue of money magazine, there was an article about Public radio'
s "Sound Money" show. Bob Potter is the show's host and Erica Whittlinger
is a regular, giving out specific investment advice to listeners. It
sounds to me like it rivals Bob Brinker's "Money Talk". (I have listened to
Brinker several times, and am somewhat disappointed because he doesn't
cover specific stock issues)
Sound Money originated on Minnesota Public Radio and it is broadcasted live
on saturdays at 10 a.m. central time on 83 public radio stations and on tape
on 42 other stations across the country.
My question is: what are the public radio stations that carry this
program. If people respond to my e-mail (with the station, frequency, city
of broadcast, and time of broadcast), I will post a summary.
I believe this information could benefit everyone, so PLEASE RESPOND if a
public radio station near you broadcasts this show!!
Thanks

There used to be (is?) a program broadcast out of KCRW in
Santa Monica, CA called Joe Frank: Work In Progress. The programs
were put together by this radio performance artist, Joe Frank.
If anyone knows if he's still doing the program and/or where
I can get tapes, please post or send mail.
Thanks,
Sylvia Isler

They are considering an internet account there. Right
now, they have a 202 area code and 2400 bps. I think
they would like gopher.

Subject: Top 40 station list for northern california (10-2-93)
From: newman@netcom.com (Charles E Newman)

TOP 40/CHR STATION LIST FOR STATIONS THAT CAN BE HEARD IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIATOP 40 STATION LIST FOR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
Note: KWIN is no longer on the list, they are now religious
CALLS FREQ CITY NAME
KEWB 94.7 Chico B 94-7
KWNZ 97.1 Reno Z-97
KHQT 97.7 San Jose Hot 97-7
KDON 102.5 Monterey K-DON 102-5
KHTN 104.7 Merced Hot 1-0-5
With KFIA doing very badly in the ratings, maybe they should consider
going CHR/Top40 to replace the "void" now created in the Sacramento area
with the departure of KWIN. KQBR in Davis should consider doing the same
thing. An AM/FM combination with KQBR and KRAK-AM becoming a AM/FM
Top40/CHR combo would really fill a void over northern california as
KRAK-AM can be heard in 30 California counties including most of the 9
Bay Area counties. Both stations are doing poorly in the ratings and this
could be the answer to them doing better in the ratings. An AM/FM combo with
KFIA would also work because KFIA can also be heard over most of northern
california.
