Just a note to say that KALW in San Francisco (91.7) is now running the
BBC live overnight from midnight to 6:00am. This marks the first time
KALW has been on 24 hours a day since its start in 1940 as the first FM
in the West. KALW Information Radio is a non-commercial affiliate of
NPR and APR, and also carries programming from Canada's CBC, and local
public affairs, arts, and music programming.

While there were several artists who recorded this song, who is recognized
as having the melifluous voice which made this song so popular? From my
short period of spinning wax, I seem to recall that it was Vaughan Monroe;
however, as memory improves with time, the details of things get lost.
As is it at the moment, I feel a bit like the Flying Dutchman, con-
demned to wander about the halls humming..."When they begin...."

Hmm... I heard that the new management fired ALL staff, on-air and
everyone else! I can't remember his name, but the new Program Director
was quoted in R & R saying that WCXR would be remaining classic rock,
at least for now...
anyway, since I moved to the DC area, CXR has been my favorite
station and I'm pretty upset about this... I want to write a letter
to the new management to complain....

Again... I read about this guy in R&R and he said about leaving

That may not have been a legal ID. The legal ID has to come within
five minutes of the top of the hour, and must consist of the call
letters and city of license, with only a frequency or channel no.
allowed to separate the two. It's very easy for a station to use
a legal-sounding ID most of the hour, like:
"Country 98, WCTK-FM Providence"
and then just hit the legal once at :55 or :56...
"Country 98, WCTK-FM New Bedford Providence."
Note that as many times as WCTK uses the "providence" ID during
the hour, their city of license is still New Bedford. Likewise,
I don't believe WLUP(AM) has changed calls until:
a) I see it in M Street...they work from official FCC releases.
and
2) I hear "WMVP Chicago" within 5 minutes of the top of the hour.

antiquated understandings were that it was 2 minutes either side of

Just to clarify the "company line" on WBZ allegedly buying WEEI:
Mark S. is quoting several reports in the Boston papers over the
last few days saying a deal is imminent for WBZ to acquire WEEI.
This is all coming out of WEEI. There are indeed negotiations
going on, but the WEEI people have ignored our requests to keep
quiet while the negotiations continue.
As of Sunday 31 October, no papers have been signed and nothing
is official. When it is official, I assure you the first thing
I'll do is post a note about it. In the meantime it's all just
rumor and may never happen at all.

What is the status of WVEI, Worcester, MA, which has been simulcasting
WEEI? Do the Celtics own it, too? Is it included in the deal?
Could those of us in western Mass. induce Group W to re-activate
WBZA in Springfield, since they seem to be in an expansionistic
mood ;-) ?

Subject: Columbus OH ratings
From: Kyle McPeck <nbs13@austin.onu.edu>
Organization: NONE
Here are the ratings from the Columbus OH market.
1. WTVN-AM 8.3
2. WSNY-FM 7.9
3. WNCI-FM 7.6
4. WLVQ-FM 6.9
5. WHOK-FM 5.9
6. WBZX-FM 5.2
7. WRVF-FM 5.1
8. WCLT-FM 5.1
9. WWHT-FM 3.5
10. WCKX-FM 3.5
11 WBNS-FM 3.4
12. WBNS-AM 3.2
13. WCOL-AM 3.2
14 WCOL-FM 2.9
15. WWCD-FM 2.7
WTVN won big due to their morning show host Bob Connors. WNCI-FM took a
small dive as they began increasing the rotation on *disco* music of all
things.
WHOK-FM won the country race between themselves, WRVF, WCLT. It was
announced recently that WHOK-FM had been bought and the buyer was
interested in purchasing WRVF "The River". WCLT-FM took a big jump as
they increased their promotions with their recent "100 days of Summer"
contest.
In the Oldies battle WBNS-FM came out on top beating WCOL who was also
beat by their sister station. WCOL was recently purchased by Nationwide
Communications, owner of WNCI-FM. It is rumored WCOL-FM will go country
soon.....
WCOL-AM gained big on the news/talk format and Rush Limbaugh. Sad news
for them that they are losing Rush to WTVN in December.

Subject: RE: Subcarriers on TV stations??
From: JOHN SCHMIDT <schmidt@auvax1.adelphi.edu>
Organization: NONE
Subcarriers do exist on TV stations, just like FM, but not for the same
purposes.
The most common subcarriers are those used for stereo, with a system somewhat
similar to that used for FM radio, but with some improvements. The pilot
frequency is 15,734 Hz, locked to the horizontal sync frequency of the video
carrier. The center frequency of the subcarrier (double sideband supressed
carrier) is double the pilot frequency. The subcarrier (but not the baseband
L+R signal) audio(before modulation) is processed with a DBX noise reduction
compression algorithym, to compensate for the L-R noise which has always
plagued FM stereo. There are some other differences also.
There is also the SAP subcarrier, Second Audio Program. This is an "open"
subcarrier, intended for reception by the general public. Most common use is
for second language (Spanish, etc.) or descriptive information for the blind
(done primarily by PBS). Some stations have duplicated a co-owned FM, put the
BBC World service, or the Weather Service on the SAP, all of which causes gross
confusion when your four year old kid gets ahold of the tv remote control and
switches the TV audio to SAP, and the parents don't know what happened.
"something's wrong with the TV, when I tune it to Channel 13, you hear the BBC,
instead of PBS". The best move seems to be either to turn the SAP subcarrier
off when it isn't needed, or program a mono mix of the main channel audio on
the SAP.
There is also defined a "PRO" (for professional) subcarrier, intended as a
"closed" or private subcarrier for TV station internal use. The most common
use is as an "IFB" for ENG use. That, for those not up on TV lingo is
"interruptible foldback" or the audio fed to the earpiece that the talent
wears, so s/he can hear the station, and the producer can, by pressing a key on
the intercom, talk into the talent's ear, "interrupting" the program audio.
I don't have my rulebook handy, but I don't think you can legally lease out
the PRO channel. It is not anywhere near a full quality channel.
There also is space for a telemetry subcarrier for transmitter remote control.
There is no provision in the rules for an "SCA" type channel for leasing to
others for non broadcast-related private use. There really isn't enough
bandwidth, the sound carrier frequency is really too close to the edge of the 6
MHz TV channel allocation. If you crammed anything more in there, the
deviation would push you over into the next channel, or in the case of
band-edge channels, interfere with the services in the adjacent frequencies.
John
BTW, on a totally different subject, Harold H. might be interested to know that
LPB is now offering an FM "carrier current" system. Not really carrier current
though. They make a leaky coax, which you string down the corridors of the
dorm, it's like Radiax, but supposedly a lot less expensive. They claim you
can get reasonable Stereo reception on most receivers, and still be within the
FCC radiation limits, if you put it every two stories or so in a dorm. From
what I understand, it only takes milliwatts to drive the coax.
We are considering trying it to replace the never listened to AM carrier
current transmitters we have in some dorms. We have used the AM side as a
training ground before allowing new DJ's on the over-the-air FM station here.

It's cruel that the FCC used the only multi-syllable letter in the English
language as the prefix for all eastern US call letters. When there's more than
one "W" it's even worse, as Bill points out.
I worked at WWUH West Hartford Connecticut, at the University of Hartford.
Those calls were especially hard for new broadcasters.
What helped me to always pronounce the "W" correctly was to remember that
"there's an 'L' in 'W'".
