    I am in the final process of installing an Auditronics
A210 series audio board for our on-air control room and have run
across the following problem.  The way the telephone module is
set up it is impossible to monitor a phone conversation through
the monitors because turning the phone mod. on activates the
mic modules and mutes the speakers.  This is ok for phone
conversations or call-in shows, but for putting remote broadcasts
that come in over the phone line on-air this is not so nice.
This means that to monitor the game the operator would either
have to use headphones all the time or use a seperate source
of audio such as a radio.  The only fix we have thought of is
to use a CMOS analog/Digital switch and install this inline
with the control line from the telephone module that mutes
the speakers and also with the 3 prefader mic lines.  That
way the speakers are not muted and the mics are not live
(no possible feedback).  If anyone is familiar with this
board or has any other suggestions I'd be glad to hear them.

A number of clear channels use their power and sports affilitations in
their "positioning."  In Cincinnati in the 1970's, WLW IDed itself as:
"The 50-thousand-watt clear channel voice of the Reds, the Bengals, and the
Stingers...this is WLW, Cincinnati."  (They may still do something like
that...and I believe WFAN/New York has used something quite similar with New
York teams.)

Also, a question.  I believe the old WKBW/Buffalo used to call itself "One
of America's two greatest radio stations," or something to that effect.
Can aybody recall that, and explain the reference?

Unmentionable.  The SF channel, 98.9 has never made money, according to
reliable sources (except once when it was bought for $100,000 via a
minority ownership preference ruling, then sold 3 years later for $3
million).  Viacom, the current owner, has not done well with it, which
accounts for its 3rd format change since your heard the "double 99"
format.  They're now KSRI/KSRY.

|had some kind of talk show on, the format of which escapes me.

|change, and (3) in the latest Arbitrons?

|c) Is FM talk-radio taking any sort of hold nationwide? I certainly hope
|not - I feel that there are better uses for a 15 kHz audio band than just
|to hear a 3kHz-wide telephone call clearly.

The original KDBK/KDBQ "Double 99" format you recall was scrapped over a year ago (Summer, 92)
for a somewhat vacuous "free-form" rock format, which included a lot of morning chatter
and talk, "DJ flexibility", with varied guests, etc, and maybe 1 song an hour
(more in the PM). I don't recall the ratings, but I do not think they were good.
Several noted bay area radio personalities (canned elsewhere) reappeared, as well
as a few new folks (such as "New York Vinnie"). In my opinion, it was pretty bad.
I believe someone on the net said "I'll give'em 6 months", and he/she was spot on.
I don't recall the ratings of the 2nd incarnation. The pair of stations is now known
as "Star FM" (KSRY/KSRI), and are playing "Stars of the 80's and 90s". Mostly new DJ personalities.
This is a very structured format, and I know it is in use in many places, such as Philadelphia.
Again, I don't know the current ratings (sorry, maybe someone else will chime in). In the
7 years I have been here, the 98.9 station has changed formats 6 or 7 times, call letters
3 or 4 times, and owners at least 3 times.

I've only heard FM talk radio in Philadelphia (WWDB). Just last weekend, I was up in Reno,
and noticed one of the 3 FM country stations switched to talk/rock, a weird format of
talk in the mornings and afternoons on weekdays, and rock programming at night and weekends.
The DJs are live for the rock, but I didn't hear the talk. Can't say much about how this
will work.

Sure, but it would have given me a different perspective on things.  There
is nothing wrong with that, but there are a lot more people with a computer
industry perspective than a broadcasting industry perspective out there.
It all depends on how you care to look at the world, I suppose.

Are there any hard to announce calls in use?  Something like KZJd, WFBL
(which is in Syracuse, or was), WTQJ, KQPL, etc.  (just making these up
on the fly, any really bad ones I can't think of now?).  What sort of
combinations (non dirty-word sort) rarely get requested from the FCC?
Also, calls like WUGH (ugh) or KYUK (yuk) probably never get used.

                            INFORMATION

Here are the basics.  For a complete file on the charter of this publication
        and it's guidelines, send email to the Internet Address of
            [e-mail] with the word 'help file'
                            as the subject.

1) AVAILABILITY: Anyone with an e-mail account on any major system can
   subscribe to Airwaves. There is no charge for subscriptions.  Some
   non-Internet systems do charge a nominal fee for reacing Internet e-mail.
   Also, all articles published in Airwaves are echoed to Usenet newsgroup
   rec.radio.broadcasting.  The subscription desk's e-mail address is -
   [e-mail]

2) SUBJECTS:  Virtually any topic that pertains to domestic radio
   broadcasting.

3) POSTING:  You may post directly to Usenet - or - you may email articles
   directly to  [e-mail].  All articles are reviewed by
   the editor/moderator prior to posting.

4) POLICIES:  Basically just keep the flame and noise levels down, stay on
   topic, edit quoted text as much as possible, and try to keep the
   'Brain-To-Bullsh*t' ratio as high as possible :->.
   Again, for a complete file on these topics, see 'help file' above.

5) ARCHIVES:  We keep archives of all past issues available for FTP at the
   Internet site of deja-vu.aiss.uiuc.edu.  They are in the directory -
   /misc/rec.radio.b-cast, and are arranged in sub-directories acording to
   issue number.  All are in compressed (.Z) format and should be transfered
   in the binary mode within FTP.  If you have trouble with FTP, or are on a
   system that does not allow FTP, let me know at [e-mail],
   and I'll try to assist.  For those using DOS or Macintosh platforms, there
   are utilities available free, or as shareware, that will decompree Unic .Z
   files.  We hope to have an archive server up and running shortly so you
   can retrieve files via e-mail automatically.
