Subject: Die-hard Dick Bartley fan misses programs
From: sprengt0664@cobra.uni.edu (Timothy J. Sprengeler)

I'm a fan of Dick Bartley's nationally syndicated (in the USA) weekend
radio programs--Rock 'n' Roll's Greatest Hits and American Gold--despite my
young age of 22. These programs feature the classics of the mid-1950's to
early 1970's. The local affiliate station in my area, WMT-FM in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, has not aired the programs the last two weekends. I know that KLYF-FM in
Des Moines, which I can pick up with a good antenna, carried them as recently
as this past spring. I don't listen to that station often because of the
distance. However, I tuned in the weekend before last and they weren't
carrying the program either. KOKZ-FM in Waterloo, Iowa (which is where I live)
carried these programs for a while, but they dropped them in the spring. (I
always figured this was because WMT was carrying them, too.)
Anyway, I was wondering whether Bartley has gone off the air, or
whether I'm the victim of a local programming change. Another station in my
area, KWAY-FM in Waverly, Iowa, has its own local classic rock program on
Saturday nights. It's not quite as good as Bartley's programs IMHO, but it's
the next best thing. :-) Still, I'd be interested in hearing from other Dick
Bartley fans (or radio personnel who are familiar with his programs).

A station with those call letters (or CGST) would probably not get one
listener up here in Canada. GST stands for the vastly hated "Goods and
Services Tax".

From: PACHECO@acs.harding.edu (Captain Ron)

I've scanned this newsgroup and I'm not certain if this is the correct
place to post this query, but in the hope that someone might be able to
provide me with some information, here goes.
About 15 to 20 years ago while living in L.A. County, CA, I listened to
a radio program entitled the "CBS Radio Mystery Theatre". Has anyone
else ever heard of this program? Is there anyone who knows if
recordings of these radio broadcasts are available? Any information
would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Ron

Howdy folks!! Three of Canada's low power SW relay stations, namely
CIQC/6005 in Montreal, CHNX/6130 in Halifax, NS. and CKFX/6080 in
Vancouver, BC. are currently not operating. I knew that CIQQ (formerly
CFCX) was back on the air briefly for the last 3 months but died again
last week for some strange reason. Does any have any more info on these
stations and when they might come back to the air again ?
It might be a good idea to send a note to the chief engineers of
these stations to to let them know that people really care that someone
does listen. These stations bring no revenue to anyone therefore they
are considered a public service. Let them know that they are appreciated
otherwise they may be history. Thank you.

The Rock Garden was a great format. WCGY was owned at the time by
Curt Gowdy. What did the Y stand for, if anything? But go back even a
little more: remember the American Revolution when it started as an overnight
format on 'BCN, helping to usher in the metamorphosis of FM from
classical to rock?

Yes, I'm getting out of New England and paying a visit to San
Francisco early in November. Any of you Bay Area radio nuts
with suggestions for sites I just _have_ to see are invited
to e-mail me. I already know about a few of the AM sites:
KGO at the Dumbarton Bridge, KIQI, KDIA, and KABL at the Oakland
end of the Bay Bridge, KBLX-AM at the studio, Ashby Ave in Berkeley.
And I know about the three big multi-user FM sites.
Is there anything else out there (radio-wise that is) that I
should not miss? And anyone I absolutely need to meet
while I'm out there? Suggestions are welcome...

WCXR FM 105.9 Washington, D.C.'s struggling CLASSIC ROCK station has
fired most of it's on air staff. Gone are morning duo Herman & McBean,
midday host Mike Kelly, PM drive announcer Mark Kessler, night announcer
Connie Wells and late night announcer Brice Keegan. Also set free were
Dan Alexander, Promotions Director, and Mark Lapidus, Promotions Director.
Rumors have been flying since the summer when Viacom announced that it
struck an agreement with Westinghouse to swap stations. Viacom owns
WMZQ (Country) in Washington and, rumor has it, when Viacom heard that
WCXR was going to switch to country they worked out a swap deal with
WCXR owners, Westinghouse. Viacom got WCXR and Westinghouse got two
stations in Houston AND $20 million. Most rumors have centered around
a format change as well as new staff. But it appears Viacom has decided
to keep the format and hire new staff. The new program director will be
Steven Kosbau. He comes from WXRK FM in New York (Howard Stern's home
station).
In the summer ratings, WCXR finished in 15th place in overall ratings
among listeners aged 12 and older. They had a 2.5 which was only
slightly down from their spring 2.6. In 1992, WCXR posted a 2.9 in the
summer and a 2.4 before that.

Subject: WFMU - tower site?
From: testnet!pr@pegasus.att.com
Organization: NONE
Read in M Street Journal that WFMU-91.1 East Orange NJ is granted
a change in tower height and changing transmitter location.
I believe I saw postings from a WFMU person (as well as an
anti-WFMU person) but will ask in general:
Where is the antenna tower now? Where is it moving to?
Interestingly, for all the hoopla over the current allocation,
and WFMU's trying to maintain its current power, the grant
is for an INCREASE in tower height.
please follow up to this newsgroup.

Maybe if you told the history of the oportunism that WFMU took against
WFUV, (assuming you know the story, that is), your little station would not
seem so much like a David to WFUV's Goliath.
Let me put it this way, I'm not happy that WFUV is no longer the REAL
student run station it once was, instead it is a puppet of American Public
Radio who consults the station, (and we all have our own consultant horror
stories). However the feelings that WFUV has towards WFMU has existed for
more than 25 years, I was hangng out with a few staff members back then and
it was always a bone of contention. WFMU has always taken when WFUV was
looking the other way and maybe that was stupidity on the part of the CE's
who should have been watching WFMU's positioning grab.
Dm> This fight cost FMU SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND dollars (FMU's total

Dm> raise the staggering lawyer and engineer fees.
Historicly WFUV went on in 1947 on a class C channel BEFORE there was
any class D authoriations. At the time it ran 3.5Kw ND from a turnstyle
above the clock tower of Keating Hall on the Bronx campus. Because of it's
channel WFUV could have protested, but instead it realized it's power
limitaton and did Upsalla a favor by not stopping the signon of WFMU in
1959. If they had it would have been a mute point since WFMU would not be
there or it might only be 10 watts.
In the early days, WFMU transmitted in a directional pattern to the S-W
and was a stricly New Jersey authorization. Because of that, WFUV was
granted it's increase to 50Kw, also ND, in 1968 and finally was able to go
up in 1970. However after about 9 months the antenna burnt up and after 3
months Jampro put another one that wound up lasting 6 months. It seams
they had not tested the antenna design above 6KW and Jampro knew WFUV
needed 12.2KW to get the 50Kw ERP.
During the legal battle that insued and the purchase of the antenna they
currently have, WFMU had its own problems. WFMU is still a free form
station and in the latter days of the Viet-Nam war, it was a bastion of
protesters and what we would call today politically incorrect types.
Upsalla was pressured to pull the plug on the transmitter. Undaunted, the
station got tower space outside of the school grounds and a rented
transmitter and antenna. WFMU was now non directional overlaping into the
now unserved area of WFUV. WFUV complicated matters by rushing to get back
on. They had been running less than 1 kw from a single ring on a pole on
the lower roof of the building wing for almost a year. WFUV got an RCA
directional antenna and had to push it north due to possable interference
to WKCR/89.9, (which was also on a potenentially 20Kw channel from the old
Dumont tower in Manhattan), if they pushed it south into the city. (BTW,
WKCR is now 20Kw DA north from the World Trade Center).
Over the years, stations have gone on in New Jersey on 90.5 in Eatontown,
also sneeking into the hole in the WFUV pattern, (WFUV served the area well
when it was 3.5 Kw), and 91.3Mhz in Trenton which prevents WFMU from
pointing south again. WKRB at 90.9 is a 10 watter in Brooklyn that is
another pain to WFUV.
25 years ago, WFUV was rebuilding and wanted to go back to 50Kw ND but WFMU
protested, refusing to give up what they STOLE from WFUV a few years
before. WFUV would have to cut back to 30Kw ND from the Bronx or go to
less then 20Kw DA-North if they moved the transmitter to Manhattan, (there
was talk of moving the station to the law and arts schools at Lincoln
Center and the antenna to the Empire State Bldg.).
Dm> I have no sympathy for FUV or their bastard of a program director,
Dm> and wish them only the worst.
I don't know, or even care, who is in charge up there today. But you can't
blame them for trying to get back what was taken from them in 1972, (albeit
due in part to the lazyness of the CE in not protesting). Keating Hall has
been declared a Landmark and they have to move the transmitter off the
clock tower or they will never be able to replace it without all sorts of
wavers.
Asside: If you knew who was student PD 25 years ago you would know what a
real bastard was, (he's now an obscure manager at AFRTS in LA). The only
saving grace was the then station manager, the late Frank A. Seitz. He's
the good guy who didn't sit on the CE to keep the channel clear. You
should thank him for WFMU's status.
I have no connection with WFUV, nor do I listen to more than one program on
it a week, (when I remember to tune in).
