Subject: AM Broadcast Question
From: thahn@andy.bgsu.edu (Thomas A. Hahn)
Organization: Bowling Green State University B.G., Oh.
Hello,
I am currently a student at Bowling Green State University
in Ohio and I work at a campus radio station. Although we have an
educational FM station, I work for WFAL, a commercial carrier-current
AM station. We have broadcast to the campus on 680 kilohertz for 23
years but we are running into problems lately.
The main problem is that our transmitters are old tube technology
and we are losing them fast. We have replaced a transmitter in a dorm and it
works well, but re-wiring the entire campus is above our budget at this time.
I am looking for any information as to why we would not be allowed
to broadcast over-the-air instead of through carrier-current. So far, I have
not found any information regarding our problem. Of course, we would love
to go FM but that is way out of reach for the time being. AM broadcast would
solve many of our problems because we are a commercial station that is NOT
funded by the University. Therefore, we need an improved signal to reach our
intended audience.
Any information at all on this topic will be of great help! Is there
a reason we cannot broadcast to the campus instead of re-wiring the old carrier-
current system in place now?
Thank you for your time,
Thomas Hahn

Subject: IS there a PAUL BARSKY in the house?
From: mgolebio@ux4.cso.uiuc.edu (Golebiowski Mark T)
Organization: University of Illinois at Urbana
Growing up in Chicago, I listened to a d.j. named Paul Barsky on
Z95. He was fired in july of '87 ? for some reason or another.
(I heard rumors of advertising a contest where he'd give away a Porsche
and the recipient wasn't happy with his Matchbox car. Another wacky
D.J. stunt gone awry! ) Anyway, I was wondering if Paul turned up anywhere.
Anyone know?
Does anyone also know about Steve, Garry, and how they're doing independent
of each other? How's Kevin Matthews in the morning?
A life-long LOOPer

From: nhmas@gauss.med.harvard.edu (Mark Shneyder 2-4219)

* On Friday(10/15), the sounds of popping champagne corks were heard
in the studios of radio stations all over New England as former PD
of WBZ-AM in Boston, of WTIC-AM in Hartford and most recently of WRKO-AM/WHDH-AM,
David 'The Junior' Bernstein got canned once again...Atlantic Radio's
owner Joe Winn had enough of Bernstein's experiments over the past
year when both issue-oriented talk outlet WRKO-AM680 and info/news/syndicated
talk/local tak WHDH-850AM lost listeners but stayed
competitive('RKO had good late-eveing/early morning numbers due to
early success of the Red Sox; people went to bed with 680 on the
dial and woke up to the same station in the morning...'RKO has brought in
a really pathetic morning talkshow combination as of May : Pat Whitley
and Marjorie Claprood. With a duo like Whitle/Claprood on the air,
there is no wonder why a lame morning guy on a CHR station is still
# 1 in this market.).
Introduction of such unqualified talkshow misfits as Victoria Jones and Eileen Prose,
major loss of Gene Burns to WOR-AM(NYC)/syndication and a cold reception
received by his replacement, Tom 'Tubby' Leykis over at 'RKO, 2
major programming moves(in early March and early May) at 'RKO/'HDH
have contributed to Bernstein's demise...The latest shuffle at both
stations which occured on October 1 didn't involve any input from
Bernstein. He was just a sitting duck at that point...
Yesterday(10/20) Atlantic Radio brought in former WHDH boss Al Mayers
to run both stations...Mayers resigned from 'HDH in Decemeber 1992 when
Atlantic acquired that station from New England Televsion Corp.
* Pyramid Broadcasting,owner of Boston's #1 station WXKS-107.9(CHR/the
station which has the #1 morning show in the city) and
a big-band WXKS-1430AM announced on Wednesday(10/13) that NewYork-based
Vestar Capital Partners invested $125 million into a strapped-for-cash
broadcasting company. Pyramid which owns 9 stations in 6 markets(Boston,
Chicago,Philadelphia,Charlotte,Buffalo and Rochester) will try to become
one of the top 5 broadcasting companies in 5 years...Its goals are :
to double up in the markets where they already have stations, acquire
stations in Top 10 markets where they're not in yet, and go into new
smaller markets 11-30 and create duopolies...
* With an announcement last week that Infinity's syndicated arm Unistar
has merged with Westwood One, can there be any doubt that Infinity-talk
stars(Howard Stern, Don Imus, G.Gordon Liddy, Doug 'Greasman' Tracht,
Don&Mike) will all be headed to a station(s) in your listening area
much sooner than you can imagind?
* Speaking of Howard Stern : His dominance in the Boston market is pretty
incredible. From cabbies to college kids working at local
stores/malls, from health care professionals working on slow eves/nights
to some of their patients at a local major hospital : Stern is the word...
I have to say that when Infinity's WBCN finally starts running Stern's show
in the morning there will be many radio changes in the #9 market...
* Speaking of Country Music scene in Boston : I'm willing to start a pool
(among Boston readers only) on which of the two stations will die off first...
In my opinion, Greater Media's WBCS-96.9(formerly WCDJ,formerly WJIB)
which started off on May 6th will go under way before its competitor
Fairbanks' WCLB-105.7(formerly WVBF;changed calls and format on February
12,1993). With 'CLB's TV and newspaper ads, billboards, taxi and bus/subway
signs, weekly promotions of country nights at major local clubs,
roaming 'CLB sports utility vehicles the station makes its self very
visible all over the city - a sign that 'CLB is still very
comitted to the survival as the Boston country outlet.
'BCS on the other hand is keeping a low profile with an occasional
TV ad here and there. 'BCS's ratings are much lower than 'CLBs(partly
because 'CLB has a very popular morning duo of Warren and Wally which
has lasted for about 13 years...). One thing is for sure - country music
format is not making it in Boston. Did anyone think otherwise before
these 2 stations came on the scene this past year?

I have it on good authority that KFRC really stands for: Keep Forever
Radiating Cheer. Honest.
And while you're mentioning SF area calls, don't forget KOME - home of the in-
famous "I KOME While I Drive" license-plate holder, which was at one point known
as "The Wet SpoT on your Dial". Hmmmmm....

Subject: Station Positioners
From: "James D. Morrow" <3X7RHRS@CMUVM.CSV.CMICH.EDU>

Hey Gang, reading about station call letters was so fun, I thought we might
try a new thing to pass the time. Hopefully it will prove to be just as
entertaining! Let's talk station positioners, IDs and even jingles (just
give the "lyrics" we'll fake the rest! Anyone who has created,or has heard of
some very CREATIVE ways of giving the ol' legal ID, positioning, re-entries
and the like - let's hear from you now!
I'll start it off with a few of my favorites-
The first one goes back to the mid-80's, its a legal ID used by KKFM in
Colorado Springs...
"Serving the Universe from atop the Rockies..This is KKFM, Colorado
Springs"
The next was used by 56 KLZ Denver when it was a major force in the market..
"From Cheyenne to Albuquerque..And the West Slope to Kansas..KLZ, Denver"
This one is currently used by WUPS in Houghton Lake, MI...
"Those other guys just deliver packages, We deliver the Hits! 98 1/2 -
UPS"
Clear channel KOA Denver uses the following to boast about it power..
"The Rocky Mountain West's 50,000 watt Blow Torch..KOA Denver."
Of course, reading them like this is not the same as hearing them with the
SFX's added. It seems that too many stations neglect to be creative when it
comes to legal ID's and a lot of stations don't even consider the use of
positioners in their programing. This is a prime opportunity to help create
a station's image. Any Favorites or Ideas?? Let's hear them!

This is my first posting to the Airwaves. I've been reading for several
weeks and have received some valuable information. Thanks.
A contribution to the person requesting call letters:
KCJJ, Iowa City, Iowa: <K>ent <C>orey, <J>osh, <J>eremy. Kent Braverman
was the original owner (now half owner with his son Corey). The two J's
are his other sons. Not positive on the last J.
KMAQ-FM/AM, <MAQ>uoketa, Iowa.
I worked at both stations.
A request:
I'm currently working on my dissertation at the University of
Tennessee-Knoxville on the subject of radio station duopolies. I'll be
investigating structure and strategies of selected duopolies. As I compile
research questions and data are there any radio station GM's or owners or
anybody else who would have some suggested areas of investigation or
questioning? Would AIRWAVES readers be interested in ongoing updates or a
synopsis of the research at its completion? Any duopolies interested in
being interviewed and researched?
Thanks. Linwood

I would bet one reason you could get 'RIF Detroit over the Youngstown
station on the same dial in Cleveland is because of Lake Erie. Water
allows FM/TV signals to transmit very well as there are no obstructions,
versus the hills, houses, etc. over land.

Well, if the atmospheric conditions are just right (I think it has to do
with the E-layer reflecting FM signals, which is rare) you can get stations
over 100 miles away. Once in June 1992 in Lawrence, KS (where I used to
live) I got stations from North Carolina on FM and later that night I got
a few Idaho and Wyoming FM stations. I also got a Tampa, FL station within
a day or two of that. The stations came in loud and clear at times, though
usually there was a lot of interference (especially if the faraway station
was .2 mHz from a local station- though in one case a far away station
CAUSED interference on a local 100000 watt station only .2 mHz away)!
In a two cases, a station that like 75 miles away (it would normally come
in, but marginally) was blanked out by the 1000+ mile away station.

Thought I might appeal to the readers of this group for some
research I'm doing...
I'm trying to compile data about the effectiveness of analog
telephone lines as a method of linking the studio to the
transmitter, particularly as compared to a microwave STL,
or perhaps some other method.
I need quantitative stuff, although good qualitative stuff might
be useful too.
If you know of any good sources I might look in, or if you can
pass on some first hand experience, I'd appreciate it greatly.
Thanks!
