Artist...GREG GINN
Album...LET IT BURN (BECAUSE I DON'T LIVE THERE ANYMORE)
Label...CRUZ
Cat.No.CRZ CD 036
Review..Greg Ginn, was once the powerforce behind Californian punk combo Blackflag. When
Blackflag broke up Ginn took a seven year sabbatical from releasing his own material in order to
devote time establishing his labels.
Ginn now runs three labels, SST, Cruz and New Alliance and as well as using conventional
advertising, mailorder catalogues etc. Ginn also uses the Infornet to get his product to people.
"I think compared to regular mail order it's just starting. We have a long history of mail
order and people are used to working that way. I think with computer technology, there's a lot of
possibilities. The interaction between individuals, just in terms of opinions and comment. The
possibilities of expanding order taking that way and eventuallty getting more into putting samples of
the music in there. We've already done a little bit of that, but it won't be too long before people can
sample a whole range of music really easily. That's fascinating to me because it offers an
alternative to mainstream media and eventually mainstream retailing." Greg Ginn.
With his labels now established Ginn has returned to music with a series of albums, the
most recent of which is "Let It Burn(Because I Don't Live There Anymore)".
As you might expect the album takes quite a few aspects from Ginn's past in that this is an
album that really knows how to rock. It's got plenty of raw edges and combines them with plenty of
attitude. This is not the rock of power ballads this is rock from the heart.
Tracks like "Lame Hollywood Cop" and "Hey, Stupid Face" kick against a society that just
can't be bothered anymore. The sheer power and drive is at times exilerating, taking you on a 0-60
drive in a time of just under 5 seconds.
Dance style production generates a wall of sound, or at times noise, that surrounds you
and then waits to be acknowledge, if not necessarily liked. "Let It Burn(Because I Don't Live There
Anymore)" is an album that shoots from the hip and demands to be listened to.
