Artist...GALAHAD
Track...SUFFERING IN SILENCE
When it comes to DIY in the music industry, you could do a lot worse than to look at
Galahad to see how things should be done. In the nine years the band have been in existance,
they have gone from pub covers band to one of the leading lights of the prog rock field.
Along the way they've formed their own record label, Avalon, and sold albums in almost
every European country, America and the Far East, and were recently in the studio with King
Crimson producer,Tony Arnold.
The band's story goes back to '85 when they were formed by Roy Keyworth and Stuart
Nicholson a period of gigging ensued and In July 1987 they pressed their first single "Dreaming
From The Inside", a single that has been changing hands for prices approaching the £20 mark.
That was followed later that years by the band's first cassette, "One Knight At Mr C's"
named in tribute of the Dorset venue where Galahad established their early fan base.
Soon they were gigging around the U.K. occasionally supporting the likes of Pendragon
and Haze. 1988 was also the year that vocalist Stuart Nicholson auditioned to take over the
voaclist slot in Marillion made vacant by the departure of Fish.
Growing requests to make new material available lead to the band starting their own
Avalon records. The first release on the label was a cassette "In A Moment Of Madness", mini
album that featured the Cerne Giant on the front cover and has subsequently sold in excess of 10
000 copies.
The band were also beginning to get noticed in other ways. A number of sessions were
recorded for local radio stations and a debut gig at The Marquee. With a merchandising wing
added to Avalon it wasn't long before the band were well on their way towards funding their next
album, which was recorded during 1990-91.
91 turned out to be a breakthrough year in many respects. The band entered a track in
The Friday Rock Show's Rock Wars. Not only did they win, they one with the highest score ever in
that competition. The result wass a session with Tommy Vance.
It proved an excellent springboard to launch their new album "Nothing Is Written" Avalon
record's first CD. The launch at the B.I.C. was attended by fans from all over Europe and the U.K.
and was followed by a headline gig at the Marquee and a support slot with Magnum, as well as a
repeat playing of their radio session.
Later that year Tommy Vance invited the band back to do a 30 minute interview piece on
the "Nothing Is Written" album.
January '92 saw another cassette release, "Other Crimes & Misdemeanours" which
brought together a collection of archive material and was classed as an official bootleg by the
band.
1992 also saw them enter the Far East markets via a deal with Pony Canyon International
who added an extra track to the "Nothing Is Written" album before releasing it over there. Import
copies of the album are now highly regarded by the band's fans.
A deal with Voiceprint last year finally gave the band the U.K. distribution they had longed
desired and limited edition cd single followed soon after. Three tracks were added to the "In A
Moment Of Madness" cassette to make a new CD Album "In A Moment Of Complete Madness" the
band's second full length cd.
In the meantime the band have also been locked away in the studio recording their next
album, "Sleepers", which is due out in the not too distant future.
Galahad are a good example of what can be achieved by hard work and determination.
Throughout they've always managed to stay in control of what they are doing and that hard work
has payed off.
Rock is often regarded as an area that it's tough to break into, because it's an area where
so many aspiring musicians want to be, and yet Galahad have shown that if you're good enough
and determined enough you can do it.
Galahad have always been a band with songs wether they be long and ranging epics or
shorter, more conventional pieces and "Sleepers" looks like it will only enhance the band's
