FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ARTISOFT SUPPORTS CALIFORNIA CLEAN AIR PROGRAM WITH
LANTASTIC(R) LOCAL AREA NETWORK
Innovative Telecommunications Pilot Project Designed To
Reduce Air Pollution, Traffic Through Technology
(TUCSON, AZ --September 21, 1993) --Artisoft, Inc.
announced today that the City of Diamond Bar will recognize
Artisoft with an award of appreciation for its contribution
of a 25-node LANtastic network to the South Coast Air
Quality Management Program. The City of Diamond Bar has
pioneered the use of telecommunications to reduce traffic
and air pollution in the city with this pilot project, which
will be demonstrated at a public ceremony at 6 p.m.,
Tuesday, September 21, 1993, at the South Coast Air Quality
Management District (AQMD) headquarters in Diamond Bar. The
pilot project, known as "City Online," implements the use of
software applications and electronic services to redefine
the way consumers do business with government.
"We hope to reduce the number of vehicle trips
necessary to conduct business with the city by providing
easy electronic access through the PC-based
telecommunications system," stated Troy Butzlaff, assistant
to the city manager.
"Artisoft wanted to be a part of this innovative
program to improve air quality throughout Southern
California," stated William Keiper, Artisoft's President and
Chief Executive Officer. "We're pleased that Artisoft's
LANtastic has been selected as the network operating system
for this pilot program.
The City Online project, made possible through
contributions in excess of $700,000, combines a 25-node
LANtastic network, an electronic bulletin board, optical
imaging technology, geographic information services,
electronic and voice mail, and fax, into an integrated
package designed to demonstrate the applicational uses of a
PC-based telecommunications system as an alternative means
of conducting business with city government. This system
allows users to dial-in via modem to the bulletin board
system or send an electronic fax through a computer or fax
machine to send and receive information and conduct business
with city government.
"The City Online telecommunications project will serve
as a model for other cities interested in enhancing public
communications and improving air quality through the
application of similar technological solutions," added Troy.
Artisoft has provided a total hardware and software
network solution, which includes the LANtastic v5.0 DOS and
Windows(TM) network software, NodeRunner(TM) 2000/T Ethernet
adapters, T-Runner(TM) 800/TC 10BASE-T concentrator, Peer
Hub(R) internal concentrator, and the Central Station(TM)
connectivity processor.
In response to growing criticism over air quality
issues, the South Coast AQMD, which encompasses four
counties and 456 cities, has adopted a comprehensive 20-year
air pollution control plan designed to bring Southern
California into compliance with federal air quality
standards. This program known as the Air Quality Management
Plan (which is the basis for the City Online project),
implements an aggressive integrated control strategy to
reduce the total amount of automobile emissions while
promoting the use of cleaner fuels, low-emission consumer
products and technological solutions.
The South Coast AQMD will unveil this pilot project at
a public ceremony, which will be broadcast on cable
television and include a live on-line demonstration of the
system. Dr. Jerry Pournelle, noted science fiction writer
and computer columnist, will serve as master of ceremonies.
Representatives from the offices of Governor Pete Wilson,
Senator Barbara Boxer, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Congressman
Jay Kim and numerous state and local officials will attend
the ceremony. In addition, chief executive officers and
representatives from the more than 75 participating vendors
will also be in attendance.
Artisoft develops and manufactures a full line of
innovative, cost-effective network communication solutions
including the award-winning LANtastic Local Area Network.
Recognized as the leader in peer-to-peer networking for DOS
and Windows environments, the LANtastic network also offers
multiplatform connectivity solutions for NetWare(R), TCP/IP
and Macintosh(R) systems. It allows up to 500 users on one
network to connect and share information and peripheral
devices such as printers, hard drives and CD-ROMs. Artisoft
maintains nine international offices and distributes the
LANtastic network and its other connectivity products in
over 70 countries worldwide.
