The first step of braking is to remove power (if applied), using the '0' key.
The brake handle will usually be in the "Running" position, where the brakes
are left as they were. By advancing the brake handle one position, the
"First Application" position is reached where the brakes are applied at a
moderate rate. Next comes the "Service" position, where the brakes are
applied for a normal service application. Finally is the "Emergency" position
where the brakes are applied as fast as possible. The brake handle is advanced
by using the 'W' key, and moved back using the 'Q' key. One position before
the "Running" position is the "Release" position which is used to release
the brakes. The release position is held by using the 'Q' key continuously.
After the 'Q' key is released the brake handle will return to the "Running"
position. The brake guage shows to what degree the brakes are applied. With
both types of brake (air and vacuum) the lower the measurement, the harder
the brakes are applied. At the highest measurement the brakes will be off.
When stopping at stations, the train should be allowed to roll through the
station, and brought to a stand at a position approaching the far end of
the platform. Due warning is given for all station stops.
