  2. The Canonical List of Canonical Lists

  5. Canonical lists are currently popular among users of the Internet.
  6. Available for many subjects, a canonical list is the "authoritative,
  7. generally accepted," list of items composing the given subject
  8. matter.  Compiled and maintained by volunteers, many of these lists 
  9. find their way to online conferences on other networks.  The lists
  10. can vary in size from a few entries to hundreds of entries split
  11. among several messages.  Since the volunteers compile and maintain
  12. the lists, they are also the ones who get to determine exactly what
  13. is canonical for each list.
