TITLE: "Cannot create directory..." Appears During Installation
PRODUCT: Ami Pro 2.0
DATE: 03-Oct-1991
PROBLEM:
The error "Cannot create directory..." terminates the installation of Ami Pro.
A DOS CHKDSK reveals that there is sufficient disk space on the drive on which
Ami Pro is being installed.
SOLUTION:
The amount of available disk space reported by DOS CHKDSK will not reflect
space that is consumed by files in hidden directories.
Some programs create hidden directories and copy information relating to
deleted files to these directories. This information can later be used if a
deleted file needs to be restored. One such program is the Norton Desktop for
Windows. This program has a feature called Erase Protect which stores copies
of deleted files in a hidden directory named \TRASHCAN (normally located one
directory beneath the root). These files have an extension of .SAV.
If another drive with sufficient available disk space to hold the Ami Pro
program (approximately 8MB) is available, install Ami Pro on that drive. If
another drive with ample space is not available, the deleted file protection
feature can usually be disabled and the deleted file information can be
removed from the drive to free up space. Refer to the documentation of the
program creating the hidden directory and deleted file information for
instructions on how to disable the feature and reclaim the disk space. If
Norton Desktop is being used, the instructions below provide general
information on how to do this:
HOW TO DISABLE NORTON DESKTOP'S ERASE PROTECT FEATURE AND REMOVE THE DELETED
FILE COPIES
1. From within Norton Desktop turn off the Erase Protect feature (refer to
the Norton Desktop documentation for specific steps).
2. Exit Windows completely to the DOS prompt.
3. Reboot the computer.
4. Change to the drive where the \TRASHCAN directory is located by typing the
drive letter followed by a colon (:) (refer to the Norton Desktop
documentation for information about which drive contains the \TRASHCAN
directory). For example, if the directory is located on drive C, type at
the DOS prompt:
C: and press ENTER.
5. Change into the \TRASHCAN directory by typing at the DOS prompt:
CD \TRASHCAN and press ENTER.
6. Type DEL *.SAV and press ENTER.
7. If the computer has more than one drive or one drive that has multiple
partitions, there may \TRASHCAN directories on the other drives. If this
is the case, repeat Steps 4-6 for each drive that contains a \TRASHCAN
directory.
8. Load Windows and attempt to reinstall Ami Pro.
