  2.      Many    newer    bikes   have
  3. "cotterless" cranks.  These have a
  4. bolt under a  metal or plastic cap
  5. on each side.  These bolts must be
  6. kept tight  or you can  damage the
  7. cranks.  Check  these  bolts every
  8. month  or  two.  Cotterless cranks
  9. cannot be removed reliably without
  10. a special  tool available  only at
  11. bike shops. Fortunately, this tool
  12. is cheap.
  13.  
  14.      Check  that  the  pedals  are
  15. tight on the cranks, especially in
  16. the winter. The left side pedal is
  17. always left-hand threaded. Turn it
  18. the  opposite  of  a  jar  lid  to
  19. remove or put on.
