  4.      Wheel bearings are adjustable
  5. (except  for  some  sealed bearing
  6. models).  If the  bearings are too
  7. tight or too  loose, you will soon
  8. damage the parts.
  9.      By  making the  bearing cones
  10. close  together,   the  adjustment
  11. becomes   tight.   Screwing   them
  12. farther  apart  causes  looseness.
  13. When a wheel is  off the bike, set
  14. the  adjustment   to  very  slight
  15. wiggliness,  because  clamping the
  16. wheel into the bike compresses the
  17. bearings slightly. Once installed,

  22. wiggle at the rim, or none at all.
  23.      On many  American-type bikes,
  24. you simply  turn one of  the cones
  25. before  tightening  the  axle nuts
  26. that hold the wheel on the bike.
  27.     Most others have thin locknuts
  28. that are jammed  against the cones
  29. to   keep   the   adjustment  from
  30. drifting. To operate on this type,
  31. loosen  the locknut  on one  side,
  32. use thin "cone wrenches" to change
  33. the adjustment, then retighten the
  34. locknut.
