  4. Cincinnati Reds' owner sparks a furor over alleged racial
  5. remarks

  8.     Using the word nigger gets you kicked off most teams. But
  9. since Marge Schott owns the Cincinnati Reds, she's probably not
  10. going anywhere. In depositions from a lawsuit filed against
  11. Schott by a former employee, several former Reds executives
  12. allege that they heard Schott refer to two players as her
  13. "million-dollar niggers." She denies using the phrase but admits
  14. using the N word. There are also charges that Schott has a
  15. swastika armband at home, but she argues that it's "memorabilia."

  17.     The suit has since been dismissed, but the charges live
  18. on, putting the city in an uproar and prompting a new look at
  19. racism in baseball. Atlanta Braves executive Hank Aaron called
  20. for an investigation. The N.A.A.C.P. hopes to use the
  21. controversy to compel Schott to hire more minorities; of 45
  22. front-office staff, only one Red is black. Jesse Jackson has
  23. talked with Schott and wants to discuss hiring practices with
  24. other baseball-team owners as well.
