  4. Jack Kevorkian aids in the suicide of another critically ill
  5. woman

  8.     Although his State Medical License was suspended last year,
  9. Dr. Jack Kevorkian of Michigan continues to make his own bizarre
  10. kind of house calls, providing the advice and equipment that
  11. have helped six of his patients take their own lives in the past
  12. two years. The last to die was a 46-year-old Pennsylvania woman
  13. suffering from cancer. Catherine Andreyev used a mask to inhale
  14. a fatal dose of carbon monoxide last Monday in Waterford,
  15. Michigan.

  17.     This time, however, Kevorkian (ghoulishly nicknamed Jack
  18. the Reaper) faced no immediate legal action, since the
  19. prosecutor in Oakland County, where all the deaths have taken
  20. place, declined to press homicide charges. Prosecutor Richard
  21. Thompson cited the fact that his past efforts have all been
  22. overturned by state courts. In the meantime, Kevorkian is free
  23. to pursue his suicide-assistance practice, unless the state
  24. legislature takes action. That seemed more likely last week,
  25. when Michigan lawmakers reacted to the latest death by finally
  26. moving toward passage of a bill that could criminalize all
  27. assisted suicides by next spring.

  29.     By contrast, Michigan law has banned the death penalty for
  30. 146 years.
