- Communications Overview
-
- IBM SearchManager LAN Server/2 and IBM SearchManager Client/2 are
- designed for an OS/2 LAN client/server environment. Depending on the
- special needs for work group management an installation in a LAN is
- very flexible and can comprise :
-
- 1. One or several servers
- 2. Clients with access to just one or several remote servers
- 3. Clients containing a local server and having access to remote server(s)
- 4. LAN requester workstations with no access to a remote server,
- but containing the SearchManager/2 stand alone solution.
-
- For any of these installations the only condition made on the location
- of documents is, that they must be accessible by the client for
- retrieval and by the respective server for indexing.
- In particular the server does not need access to documents to
- process a query.
-
- So for a client/server installation with one or more
- remote servers the documents must be located on a LAN file server
- workstation where both the clients and the servers have access,
- or the documents must be accessible via a library requester.
-
- Similarly for a local server the documents can be located on the same
- workstation as the server, or they can be located on a LAN file server
- workstation, or in a library.
