- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Installation of PSnS ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- This is the installation program for Personally Safe'n'Sound (PSnS). The
- program should be installed in 3 steps:
-
- o Set installation options
-
- To do this, select the Options button on the main Installation panel.
-
- o Install the PSnS files
-
- To do this, select the Install button on the main Installation panel.
-
- o Shutdown OS/2 and restart your computer
-
- Do this by selecting the Shutdown option on the OS/2 Desktop pop-up menu.
-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 2. Setting Installation Options ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- This panel allows you to set the configuration of PSnS that will be installed.
- The installation program automatically sets up the configuration you are most
- likely to require, but you should check each option carefully before you
- install the program, especially if you have installed OS/2 somewhere other than
- the C drive.
-
- Install Code
-
- Main Program
-
- This is the main PSnS program.
-
- Help Text
-
- This is the help text that goes with it.
-
- Tape Support
-
- Install this only if you want to back up data to a tape drive.
-
- Host Support
-
- Install this only if you want to back up data to a host mainframe.
-
- Rulebooks
-
- PSnS uses rulebooks to control backing up. If this is the first time you are
- installing PSnS, you must install rulebooks, otherwise the program will not
- operate correctly.
-
- Recover Control Files
-
- You should select this option if you are recovering PSnS from a hard disk
- crash. The control files contain all the information about the backups PSnS has
- carried out. If you are installing this version of PSnS over an old version,
- you will not need to recover control files.
-
- Update Configuration
-
- Update CONFIG.SYS allows the installation program to set up the environment
- that PSnS will run in. You must select this option if this is the first time
- you are running PSnS. You are advised to select this option anyway.
-
- Put in Startup will make sure that PSnS is started whenever you boot up your
- computer. This will allow it to keep track of files and directories as they are
- changed. You are advised to select this option the first time you install PSnS.
-
- Setting Paths for PSnS
-
- These fields allow you to choose where the various components of PSnS will be
- stored.
-
- PSnS Code
-
- This is where the main program is stored
-
- Control Files
-
- This is where the rulebooks and backup control files are stored.
-
- PSnS Profile
-
- This is where the profile is stored.
-
- The Profile contains all the information PSnS needs to know about its other
- control files. For example, it contains the names of the paths that the PSnS
- code and control files are stored in. The path of the profile itself is stored
- in the environment variable PSNSPRO. It is therefore vital, if you change the
- path for the profile that you also ask the installation program to update
- CONFIG.SYS, otherwise the environment variable cannot be set, and PSnS will not
- work on your machine.
-
- Temporary Files
-
- This is where temporary files will be stored.
-
- PSnS creates a number of temporary files while it is backing up. For example,
- if you choose to compress files and back them up to diskette, then the program
- will create a temporary copy of the compressed file before copying it to
- diskette. This field allows you to set the environment variable PSNSTMP in
- CONFIG.SYS, which determines where these temporary files will be backed up.
-
- User backup path
-
- This is the path name used for files when they are backed up.
-
- System backup path
-
- This is the path name used for backing up PSnS control files. It should always
- be different to the "User backup path".
-
- Rulebooks
-
- These fields allow you to choose which rulebook will be used when PSnS first
- runs. The default rulebook depends on the version of OS/2 you are running:
-
- 1.2 GENERAL
-
- 1.3 GENERAL
-
- 2.0 DESK20
-
- 2.1 DESK21
-
- Each of these rulebooks is designed to back up the essential system files for
- the particular version of OS/2 that you are running. You may want to add to
- these rulebooks so that they back up your personal data files as well.
-
-

-
- You should select this after you have set the PSnS installation options in the

-
-
- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Shuting down OS/2 and Restarting Your Computer ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- You can shut down OS/2 by selecting the Shutdown option on the Desktop popup
- under OS/2 version 2.x, or by selecting Shutdown on the Desktop object under
- OS/2 version 1.x.
-
- Doing this allows the environment for running PSnS to be successfully created.
- If you select Put in Startup in the Options panel the PSnS will be
- automatically started when you reboot your machine.
