  17.             This FORUM is provided as a conferencing tool to promote

  21.             IBM WorkFrame/2 Version 1.0, is a configurable, project-oriented
  22.             application development environment, featuring an SAA/CUA (TM)

  65.   I thought I had it planned just right!  I had the latest beta drops of
  66. Workframe/2, C/Set2, Toolkit/2 installed on my D: drive while the C:
  67. drive was the OS/2 boot device.  I wanted to plan it so that when I
  68. installed OS/2 GA on the C: drive (after reformatting it) I would not
  69. lose the desktop icons that had been created by Workframe/2, C/Set2 and
  70. Toolkit/2.  So what I had done was to create a folder on my D: drive
  71. into which I had moved all the desktop icons that the Workframe-C-Toolkit
  72. had created on my desktop in the hope that these icons would be kept on
  73. the D: drive safe from the re-install of OS/2 base GA on the C: drive;
  74. these desktop icons were: "IBM C Set/2", "IBM Workframe/2", "PM Develop-
  75. ment Tools", "Sample Programs" and "Toolkit Information".

  77.   But after the install of OS/2 2.0 GA I found upon opening that D:-drive
  78. folder that, although the desktop icons were still in it, the opening of
  79. these icons gave me empty icon views! (except, oddly enough, for the
  80. "IBM C Set/2" and "IBM Workframe/2" folder which had the same contents
  81. as the "Communications Manager" folder (the latest beta of which was
  82. reinstalled on the C: drive after the install of OS/2 2.0 GA)).

  84.   Now, I realize I'm talking about 2 beta releases (Workframe-C-Toolkit
  85. and ES) but the basic questions is:

  87.  Can desktop icons be saved from a total reinstall of the base or do they
  88. disappear when the OS2 INI file(s) is/are replaced upon reinstallement?
  89. Is my only solution to reinstall Workframe-C-Toolkit to have the desktop
  90. icons recreated?

  97. You created a folder with all the settings on it for your D drive.
  98. Fine. But where dir you put the folder? If it was at the Desktop,
  99. then it's gone. (Desktop is resident on your Boot drive.)
  100.     The installation of WF/2 C-SET/2 ,... writes information to
  101. the OS2.ini file. That's gone. You HAVE TO run the install
  102. to rebuild that information. (and you lose all your changes!!!!)
  103. It would be nice to have an option during the install for NOT to
  104. copy the files, just update the informations.(config.sys os2.ini FW2.ini)

  112. Thanks for the info!  I guess I'll reinstall Workframe-C-Toolkit!  I had
  113. created that folder on the D: drive and only "deposited" a shadow of it
  114. on the desktop!

  123. I've just finished installing 2.0 GA, Workframe and C Set/2, and I'm
  124. eager to start learning the new dev environment.  I opened the
  125. MAHJONGG project and selected Actions>>Make.  I got this error
  126.  
  127.   'Error trying to start program.  The program cannot be found in
  128.    the directory path'

  130. Do I need to update my config.sys, or... ?  Any help would be much
  131. appreciated.

  133. Also, is there any hard-copy documentation for the C Set and WorkFrame
  134. products available yet?

  142. Before you go too far,  WF/2 does allow you to just update the
  143. the desktop and config.sys.  In the \IBMWF\BIN directory, their
  144. is a utility called ADDUSER.EXE.  Run this program and only
  145. select the "Update CONFIG.SYS" and "Update Desktop" checkboxes.
  146. Then press O.K.  This will also update your OS2.INI file.  So, it
  147. is exactly what you are asking for.  Unfortunately, I don't think
  148. that you can do this with the other products.

  150. ASIDE: ADDUSER.EXE was actually written for the purpose of
  151.        allowing multiple users to share the same copy of the WF/2
  152.        on the LAN.  But, so far most people seem to be using it
  153.        to recover their environment after reinstalling OS/2.

  160. Actually jou should reboot between each of the installations.
  161. Start with WF2, shut down, Toolkit, shutdown, CSet2, shotdown.
  162. Those installation programs need's to knew about the other
  163. environment. Each of those has a readme file on their first
  164. diskette.

  166. DOCS: When you go out and buy the shrink-wrapped , you can order
  167. the DOCS too.

  176. I can only guess that when you installed the C Set/2, you did not
  177. ask to have your config.sys updated for you.   You can either
  178. re-install the compiler ;-),  or update your config.sys file
  179. manually. You can get the changes that you need by looking at
  180. \IBMC\BIN\CSETENV.CMD.
  181.  
  182. There is a tutorial for using C Set/2 with the WF/2.  I'm not
  183. sure why the documents are not available on OS2PROD2.  I'll
  184. check this out and let you know!

  186. P.S.  Both products have GAed and their shrinked wrapped packages
  187.       are being displayed at COMDEX in Chicago as I type this note.

  195. Great news.  Thanks for the info.  It's a good thing I decided not to
  196. reinstall WorkFrame et al before leaving the office today.  I shall use
  197. your suggestion tomorrow.  Thanks a lot.

  204. Actually, it isn't necessary to reboot after each installation.
  205. I've used the following method successfully:
  206.  
  207.    1. Install the WF/2
  208.    2. Install the toolkit
  209.    3. Install C Set/2
  210.    4. Shut down
  211.    5. reboot
  212.    6. issue the command "addtool \toolkt20\os2bin\toolkt20.ini"
  213.       if you wish to have the toolkit tools automatically installed
  214.       in the WF/2 tools pulldown
  215.  
  216. You can swap steps 1 and 2 if you wish.  However, it is important
  217. that you install C Set/2 after the WF/2 and toolkit.

  227. for WorkFrame/2:

  239. We are currently trying to get all the pubs placed in a package
  240. on OS2PROD2, so if you get the product off this disk, you can get
  241. the docs too (LIST38PP files).

  243. Of course, if you want printed and bound copies, you will need to do
  244. a PUBORDER.

  248. P.S. The "C Set/WorkFrame Tutorial" (S10G-4449) is actually shipped
  249.     with the C Set/2 product, NOT the WorkFrame/2 product (because
  250.     the steps and screen captures in it are specific to the C Set/2
  251.     compiler and debugger...although it can be generalized).

  258. Subject: Load of the program failed.  OS/2 return code = 2.

  260. Probable cause is that it can't find all the DLLs that it needs to run.
  261. Make sure that your libpath is set up right. reinstalls will erase all
  262. changes that were made by toolkit/compiler installs.
  263. Shouldn't questions from IBM id's go to the FORUMs? not CFORUMs?
