- Subject: Desktop icons gone after installing OS/2 2.0 GA.
-
- I thought I had it planned just right! I had the latest beta drops of
- Workframe/2, C/Set2, Toolkit/2 installed on my D: drive while the C:
- drive was the OS/2 boot device. I wanted to plan it so that when I
- installed OS/2 GA on the C: drive (after reformatting it) I would not
- lose the desktop icons that had been created by Workframe/2, C/Set2 and
- Toolkit/2. So what I had done was to create a folder on my D: drive
- into which I had moved all the desktop icons that the Workframe-C-Toolkit
- had created on my desktop in the hope that these icons would be kept on
- the D: drive safe from the re-install of OS/2 base GA on the C: drive;
- these desktop icons were: "IBM C Set/2", "IBM Workframe/2", "PM Develop-
- ment Tools", "Sample Programs" and "Toolkit Information".
-
- But after the install of OS/2 2.0 GA I found upon opening that D:-drive
- folder that, although the desktop icons were still in it, the opening of
- these icons gave me empty icon views! (except, oddly enough, for the
- "IBM C Set/2" and "IBM Workframe/2" folder which had the same contents
- as the "Communications Manager" folder (the latest beta of which was
- reinstalled on the C: drive after the install of OS/2 2.0 GA)).
-
- Now, I realize I'm talking about 2 beta releases (Workframe-C-Toolkit
- and ES) but the basic questions is:
-
- Can desktop icons be saved from a total reinstall of the base or do they
- disappear when the OS2 INI file(s) is/are replaced upon reinstallement?
- Is my only solution to reinstall Workframe-C-Toolkit to have the desktop
- icons recreated?

- You created a folder with all the settings on it for your D drive.
- Fine. But where dir you put the folder? If it was at the Desktop,
- then it's gone. (Desktop is resident on your Boot drive.)
- The installation of WF/2 C-SET/2 ,... writes information to
- the OS2.ini file. That's gone. You HAVE TO run the install
- to rebuild that information. (and you lose all your changes!!!!)
- It would be nice to have an option during the install for NOT to
- copy the files, just update the informations.(config.sys os2.ini FW2.ini)

-
- Before you go too far, WF/2 does allow you to just update the
- the desktop and config.sys. In the \IBMWF\BIN directory, their
- is a utility called ADDUSER.EXE. Run this program and only
- select the "Update CONFIG.SYS" and "Update Desktop" checkboxes.
- Then press O.K. This will also update your OS2.INI file. So, it
- is exactly what you are asking for. Unfortunately, I don't think
- that you can do this with the other products.
-
- ASIDE: ADDUSER.EXE was actually written for the purpose of
- allowing multiple users to share the same copy of the WF/2
- on the LAN. But, so far most people seem to be using it
- to recover their environment after reinstalling OS/2.

- Actually jou should reboot between each of the installations.
- Start with WF2, shut down, Toolkit, shutdown, CSet2, shotdown.
- Those installation programs need's to knew about the other

- I can only guess that when you installed the C Set/2, you did not
- ask to have your config.sys updated for you. You can either
- re-install the compiler ;-), or update your config.sys file
- manually. You can get the changes that you need by looking at
- \IBMC\BIN\CSETENV.CMD.
-
- There is a tutorial for using C Set/2 with the WF/2. I'm not
- sure why the documents are not available on OS2PROD2. I'll
- check this out and let you know!
-
- P.S. Both products have GAed and their shrinked wrapped packages

- Actually, it isn't necessary to reboot after each installation.
- I've used the following method successfully:
-
- 1. Install the WF/2
- 2. Install the toolkit
- 3. Install C Set/2
- 4. Shut down
- 5. reboot
- 6. issue the command "addtool \toolkt20\os2bin\toolkt20.ini"
- if you wish to have the toolkit tools automatically installed
- in the WF/2 tools pulldown
-
- You can swap steps 1 and 2 if you wish. However, it is important
- that you install C Set/2 after the WF/2 and toolkit.

- We are currently trying to get all the pubs placed in a package

- You can use the ADDUSER tool (which is documented in the WorkFrame

- all project and language profile files in that directory (which could be
- a shared directory on the server). There is currently no way to have

-
- You should be aware that WorkFrame makes no attempt to serialize

- a common occurrence, but to be safe I'd suggest making the directory read

-
- Yes. You can install the WorkFrame/2 on the LAN and use the AddUser
- utility to create the WorkFrame/2 environment on the client workstation.
- Use the normal installation process, using a target installation
- directory on the LAN server. From the client machine, access the
- IBMWF\BIN directory on the server, and type: ADDUSER
-
- You'll get a dialog from which you can choose to copy a number of items
- to the client, including the user profile file (to customize the
- interface), language profiles, .PRJ files, etc. In your case, you'd
- probably only want the user profiles.

- this way or not. The situation is not devastating, simply annoying.
- The situation unfolds: 1) I start up the workframe/2; 2) 'MAKE" a pro-
- ject; 3) minimize the MAKE results window; 4) minimize the workframe/2
- window; 5) do some other things; 6) bring up the minimized window viewer
- icon view; 7) close the MAKE results window. At this point in time I am
- unable to restart the workframe by double-clicking on its icon in this
- minimized window view. I must close the workframe window and restart the
- workframe/2 from "scratch" to return to my original point of work in
- progress. This is annoying. Somehow, this just does not seem right. Has
- anyone else experienced this; is there a known way of getting around
- this? Thanks.

-
- A base project can only have a single target, and a single set of options
- for LINK, COMPILE, etc (different options would be required to build
- a DLL and EXE). You could set up two base projects, one for the DLL, and
- one for the EXE (both can be in the same directory if you wish). You
- can then create a composite project, containing both base projects, which
- will allow you to build both at the same time. -tim

-
- I have done some investigation of NMAKE using CodeView to disassemble the
- code. I have found that the problem occurs when checking the version of
- OS/2 in order to determine if long filenames are supported. For ANY
- minor version number less than 20 (corresponds to .2) long filenames are
- not allowed. Thus the problem with OS/2 version 2.0.
-
- I have generated two patches that appear to get around this problem. One
- for Microsoft's NMAKE version 1.11 and the other for IBM's NMAKE version
- 2.000.000. The patches allow long filenames with any version of OS/2
- after 1.0.
-
- For NMAKE version 1.11, file size 86539 and file date 2-20-90 use the
- PATCH utility supplied with OS/2 and specify file offset 7A60. The data
- at this location should be:
- 80 3E CD 13 14 ...
- The 14 is the version number. Change this to 00. Thus the data should
- now be:
- 80 3E CD 13 00 ...
-
- For NMAKE version 2.000.000, file size 88013 and file date 3-30-92 use
- the PATCH utility and specify file offset 7B34. The data at this
- location should be:
- 80 3E 6D 15 14 ...
- The 14 is the version number. Change this to 00. Thus the data should
- now be:
- 80 3E 6D 15 00 ...
-
- There is at least one other place where the version is checked, but so
- far I have not found a problem leaving that code unchanged.
-
- This is NOT an OS/2 problem, but rather a bug in Microsoft's code.

- I think that there is actually a bit in the EXE that is checked when
- it is a 16-bit EXE to figure out whether or not the EXE supports or
- allows long file names to be supported. This bit is normally turned
- on using a particular option on the NAME statement in the .DEF file.
- For 32-bit EXEs, this bit is on or is never checked and assumed to be
- on. NMAKE is a 16-bit EXE and so I think this is what is allowing
- your 'fix' to work. A better way would be to find the bit since
- changing the version number could have other consequences. Either

- Perhaps I should have provided more details in my append. NMAKE version
- 1.11 (the one provided with Microsoft's C 6.0 compiler) works fine under
- OS/2 1.3 WITH long filenames. Thus the bit IS set in the .EXE that

- The best approach is to use EPM, or another editor that supports the
- QWIKINF help. While you're typing, simply position the cursor on
- a function name, and hit Control-H (help). This will start the C Set/2
- help (assuming the cursor was on a C library function), and open it to

- Another method is to add the C Set/2 reference (or again, the toolkit

- Wayne, there's lots being done on the makefile creation, but I don't

- Second things first, you can create a new project, pointing to the same

-
- Finally the new makefile creation utility is far more flexible than
- the existing tool, and will allow any tool (or pre-processor or...)

- the idea is to minimize the number of times you'll need to look at

-
- The C Set/2 compiler is strictly a 32-bit compiler, except for its

- Not today. Right now, all the stuff for a project has to be in a single
- directory. The next release, coming out in a not-too-distant timeframe,
- will have many extensions, and working on multiple directories will be one.

- From: Tim Francis -- WorkFrame/2 development
-
- The next version will indeed support multiple directories, but not
- separated into source and binary directories -- all directories specified
- will be used. The basic tools used (such as the compiler) almost always
- place the output (object) files in the same directory as the source.
- WorkFrame has no control over that. If you separate your files, the next
- version will show them all in the same project (if that's what you want),
- but we have no plans to do the separating for you.
-
- I have never heard this request before, so I don't think it's _that_
- popular. Does anyone else have this requirement? (Note: That's a
- different question than "would you use this feature"? The question is
- "will you be impacted if it's not included"?) -tim

-
- Actually, separating the binaries and source is a very useful capability.
-
- Outside of WorkFrame/2, I structure my development libraries as follows:
-
- project-id\ Executables
- .EXE
- project-id\BOOK BookManager File(s) <<Future>>
- .BKS and .BOO
- project-id\DLL Dynamic Link Library(ies)
- .DLL
- project-id\HELP Help and VIEW File(s)
- .HLP and .INF
- project-id\INCLUDE Include File(s)
- .H
- project-id\LIB Object and Resource Library(ies)
- .DLG and .ICO and .RES
- .LIB and .OBJ
- project-id\SRC Program and Resource Source Code
- .C and .RC and .SQC
-
- It would be great if I could have the same flexibility and control
- from within the WorkFrame/2 environment.

- That sounds like a known bug, caused by saving the window
- position when the frame has been maximized. Bring up WorkFrame as
- you normally would, then when the background disappears hit ALT-F6
- to give focus to the frame, then ALT-F5 to restore the frame.
- Saving this window position will result in the maximized WorkFrame
- being presented in subsequent startups. -tim
